Wu Hufan is known as the best bamboo painter in modern times. He started with the Song Dynasty double-hook technique, and also incorporated Zhao Yong's ink bamboo and Yun Shouping's boneless method.

He used light ink or light colors to paint bamboo, and especially used and controlled the water just right, making the bamboo leaves have the appearance of "curled phoenix tails".
