Foldable screen mobile phones are becoming increasingly mainstream models, and Honor has chosen to continue launching new products in this field.

At the launch of the Magic flagship, Honor released a new folding screen phone, the Magic V3. Compared with the previous generation, the thickness of the Magic V3 is further reduced, with a thickness of 9.2mm when folded and 2.84mm when unfolded, and the weight of the whole phone reaches 226g.

In order to ensure the battery life of the phone in a thinner and lighter body, Honor uses a silicon-carbon negative electrode battery with a silicon content of 10% in the battery of this phone. The average thickness of the battery is only 2.6mm, and the battery capacity reaches 5150mAh. At the same time, both Honor Magic V3 and Honor Magic Vs3 support 66W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging.

In terms of communication, Honor Magic V3 supports two-way voice calls and two-way SMS sending and receiving functions on Tiantong satellite for the first time on a folding screen. Through the miniaturized satellite baseband, the motherboard area of Honor Magic V3 is reduced by about 40%, which improves the satellite connection speed. In addition, Honor has also cooperated with AutoNavi to connect to maps directly via satellite in an off-network environment, providing convenience for seeking help in the wild. This function is planned to be launched later.

In terms of software system, split-screen management is one of the main application innovations of foldable screen mobile phones in this form.

This time, Honor MagicOS 8.0.1 supports binding specific SIM card numbers for work and life spaces, and completely isolates contacts and call records. At the same time, permission management in parallel spaces can prevent usage traces from being leaked. Honor's trust ring capabilities have also evolved, supporting the operation of two devices on one screen for the first time, and all applications, services, and files on the two phones can be shared with one drag.

"Honor is technically ready for a tri-fold product (a three-section folding screen phone), but whether to launch it depends on business choices."

Honor CEO Zhao Ming said that Honor has laid out various technologies for folding screen updates, such as tri-fold and scroll. However, when the technology layout will be commercialized and whether it is suitable for commercialization remains to be considered. Because there is uncertainty about whether the folding screen technology route can be continued, it is impossible to lay out every technology route 100%.

At present, the mainstream folding screen mobile phone forms include horizontally symmetrical screen folding inward and outward folding screens. After unfolding, the mobile phone screen can be approximately doubled in size; vertically symmetrical folding screen design. After folding, the size of the mobile phone becomes smaller and easier to carry. In the three-fold form, the folding screen mobile phone adopts an "S" horizontal folding structure. When fully unfolded, the screen size will be larger.

Among domestic manufacturers, Huaxing Optoelectronics, Visionox and BOE have previously demonstrated their tri-fold screen concept terminals. Among foreign manufacturers, during MWC 2023, Samsung exhibited two highly completed tri-fold screen mobile phones, including Flex S and Flex G. Both Flex S and Flex G adopt a double-link hinge folding design.

But so far, no folding screen mobile phone has achieved mass production of three-folding mobile phones.

Relevant market insiders believe that compared with the common folding screen products currently on the market, the tri-fold screen needs to solve two major problems: on the one hand, the screen folds inward and outward at the same time, and the flexible screen is subjected to compressive stress on one side and tensile stress on the other side, which is a huge test for the flexible screen's force-bearing capacity; on the other hand, the two reverse folding stresses generated will cause multiple film layers and module structures to slip, which will affect the stability of the screen module and the display life.(This article was first published on Titanium Media APP, author | Rao Xiangyu Editor | Zhong Yi)
