it house reported on october 6 that the 2024 satellite internet technology and industry development forum was held in beijing at the end of september. ye yang, a senior engineer from china unicom research institute, attended the conference and gave a keynote speech.

ye yang mentioned that china unicom's satellite communication ground station can be traced back to the 1970s. after more than 50 years of development, it has now developed full-service support capabilities such as data, voice, video, and the internet. on this basis, china unicom and partners conduct nr ntn (non-terrestrial network) low-orbit on-orbit test

ye yang introduced that this test adopted the international standard protocol (3gpp nr ntn r17 standard) and the mobile phone direct connection standard frequency band (ka to l frequency band), using galaxy aerospace's "little spider web" low-orbit test satellite, in accordance with "frequency conversion + 3gpp ntn transparent forwarding networking mode" to realize direct connection of nr ntn terminals to satellite broadband communications, verify the end-to-end comprehensive service capabilities of terminals directly connected to low-orbit satellites under 5mhz bandwidth

this in-orbit test was launched in november 2023 and successfully realized the integration of data and vonr business processes based on the galaxy space "ap03" satellite.

ye yang said, china unicom has completed the first nr ntn low-orbit on-orbit test for a domestic operator, opening up end-to-end data services in orbit, the speed is comparable to that of ground 4g terminals. in a single cycle of satellite transit, the terminal can maintain stable business traffic for up to 3 minutes.the maximum downstream rate is 11mbps (it home note: 1.375mb/s), and the upstream rate is 4mbps (0.5mb/s); a vonr satellite call was realized, and the mos was maintained above 4 points during the call, with a maximum of 4.5 points, in line with expectations and meeting the call quality requirements of terrestrial mobile communication systems.

ye yang emphasized that the implementation of mobile phone direct connection services requires further improving satellite, base station/core network, and terminal capabilities, deepening satellite-ground collaboration, aiming to implement business scenarios, and cooperating with the satellite industry, ground mobile communications industry, and terminal industry to carry out systematic development research on key technologies, break through key blocking points, and achieve end-to-end full-process connectivity.
