in mid-september, at the invitation of the south african air force, the chinese air force sent a y-20 to south africa to participate in the 12th aerospace and defense exhibition. on september 24, local time, after successfully completing this mission, the y-20 took off from waterkloof air force base in pretoria, the administrative capital of south africa, and returned with a high reputation.
this air show is the second time the chinese air force has participated in an international air show abroad this month, and it is also the first time the y-20 has flown to south africa. during the transfer to south africa, the mission crew flew tens of thousands of miles, crossing mountains and seas, crossing the equator, and crossing oceans, demonstrating the excellent long-range maneuverable delivery capabilities of the y-20 transport aircraft.
before the opening of the air show, which coincided with the mid-autumn festival, south african chinese and overseas chinese met at the air show venue to take photos with the y-20. they took precious "reunion photos" with the country's important weapon and the five-star red flag in a foreign country.
on september 18, the african aerospace and aviation exhibition kicked off. in the static display area, the y-20 was neatly arrayed with dozens of aircraft from various countries, attracting many viewers to stop and watch. the dark gray paint, huge the body attracts the attention of the audience. in the afternoon of the same day, south african president cyril ramaphosa visited the y-20 exhibition area and had a long and in-depth exchange with the pilots. he inquired in detail about the appearance, size, flight performance, capabilities and combat applications of the y-20 aircraft, and expressed his opinions on china's independent research and development. the y-20 aircraft was highly praised, saying it was "very beautiful, very advanced, and i love it very much."
on september 21, the chinese air force's y-20 brought its "first show" at this air show. in 12 minutes, it brought high-elevation angle anti-small arms climb, low-altitude and high-speed approach, large-slope low-altitude maneuvers, the five flight maneuvers of passing through the field at low altitude, low speed and landing on a small route fully demonstrated the superb flight skills and superior aircraft performance of the y-20 crew, winning rounds of cheers from the audience. the y-20 completed all the performance moves and when taxiing through the viewing platform, the crew waved the national flags of china and south africa in the cockpit to greet the audience.
on the day of the closing ceremony, the chinese air force's y-20 aircraft once again gave a wonderful flight performance. the background music for "fat girl"'s appearance and flight that day was "waka waka (this time for africa)", the theme song of the 2010 world cup in south africa. she landed on the ground and played the classic song "amani" calling for peace. the atmosphere at the scene was once again full, and the chinese air force's y-20 perfectly completed the performance mission of the largest air show in africa.
this air show is the first time in the 24 years of the african air show that the chinese air force has been invited to participate. it is also the longest overseas voyage of the chinese air force y-20. it has greatly enhanced the african people’s understanding of the chinese air force and china’s national defense, and conveyed that china loves peace. the message has also pushed china and africa to jointly build an all-weather china-africa community with a shared future in the new era in 2024 to a climax.
the y-20's overseas flight tracks over the years are a vivid demonstration of the chinese air force's phased achievements in accelerating the construction of a world-class air force. in the future, the chinese air force will go to the world with more confidence, convey peace and friendship, and continue to fly far and wide.
