the cba league, founded in 1995, is about to usher in its "thirties". on october 12, the 2024-25 chinese men’s basketball professional league (referred to as the cba league) will officially kick off, and the newly created event-cba club cup will also make its debut.
at the new season press conference held on september 26, yao ming, chairman of the chinese basketball association, said: "the new season is about to begin. we look forward to providing more exciting events to fans across the country during this season, and hope that all of us will everyone can find their own value.”
the newly launched cba club cup aims to actively respond to the national strategy of "revitalizing the three major sports", continue to promote the reform of the competition system, provide more training opportunities for local players, and enrich the cba league competition brand system. jiang jianxian, general manager of cba company, said: "the cba club cup is a self-renewal of cba. the cba club established the cup to pay tribute to the league entering its 30th season and to pay tribute to chinese basketball."
the participating teams in the cba club cup are the teams participating in the cba league that season. different from the league's home and away game system, the cba club cup will use a tournament system to determine the champion.
the group stage of the first cba club cup will be held during the first league suspension period in november 2024. there will be four divisions with five teams in each division. the results of the group will be announced at a press conference by drawing lots. each group adopts a single round-robin format, and the top two teams in points advance to the finals.
the final stage will be held during the second league suspension period in february 2025. the eight teams that advanced in the first stage will compete in a single-elimination knockout round in the same division to ultimately determine the champion of the first cba club cup.
in addition to the innovative launch of the cba club cup, in order to cooperate with the training and competition of the chinese men's basketball national team, the league has also made adjustments in aspects such as the game round setting and the playing policy for foreign players to further enhance the excitement of the event and train and cultivate local players. according to the schedule, the regular season is adjusted to 46 rounds, and the playoffs still adopt the "3-5-5-7" competition system. the foreign player policy implements 4 players (maximum) and 7 players in 4 quarters (the first three quarters have a maximum of 2 players in each quarter. maximum 1 person in the fourth quarter).
