on the morning of september 24, at the ccf national high performance computing academic annual conference, more than 40 institutions including alibaba cloud and the institute of computing technology of the chinese academy of sciences held a press conference and jointly released the first high-throughput ethernet eth+ protocol standard in china, which can achieve a 30% improvement in collective communication performance. at the same time, the basic network protocol ip, open source network card and other hardware and systems based on the eth+ protocol were also officially unveiled, marking that the new generation of open intelligent computing networks represented by high-throughput ethernet are accelerating towards industrialization.
the high-throughput ethernet alliance was jointly initiated by alibaba cloud and the institute of computing technology of the chinese academy of sciences. its members include more than 40 institutions such as peking university, pingtou ge, centec, tencent, and bytedance. as co-chairs of the alliance, sun ninghui, academician of the chinese academy of engineering and chairman of the chinese computer society, and cai dezhong, vice president of r&d of alibaba cloud and head of infrastructure network, jointly released the 1.0 version of the high-throughput ethernet protocol standard at this conference with chen guoliang, academician of the chinese academy of sciences, wu jiangxing, academician of the chinese academy of engineering, and representatives of the core members of the alliance.
the underlying foundation of artificial intelligence networks is network protocols. just like "apple ios" and "android system", private commercial protocols are strongly bound to hardware, while ethernet protocols have gained wide support in the industry due to open and shared construction. the high throughput ethernet alliance brings together the forces of industry, academia, and research to develop and formulate unified technical standards and foundations for intelligent computing networks based on the open ethernet ecosystem.
high throughput generally refers to the system performance that achieves high utilization, high throughput and low latency at the same time. the high-throughput ethernet eth+ protocol released this time greatly improves the performance compared to standard ethernet, and can realize an open ethernet with high load ratio, high reliability, low latency and high efficiency.
the eth+ protocol achieves a 74% increase in payload ratio by optimizing the frame format; the semantic reliability and scale of eth+ ethernet are greatly improved by deeply supporting the retransmission technology of the link layer and the physical layer; the on-line computing technology based on rdma achieves an improvement of more than 30% in collective communication performance. at the same time, by redefining the ethernet preamble, high-throughput ethernet and standard ethernet can achieve efficient hybrid deployment.
at the conference, a series of achievements including open source hardware ip, commercial version ip, verification system and benchmark test set matching the eth+ protocol were unveiled. among them, the basic network layer ip based on the eth+ protocol has been widely commercialized, and the open source rdma network card design has also provided a useful reference for the industry.
