it home reported on september 24 that on monday night eastern time, an official account of openai on the social platform x was hacked and used to promote cryptocurrency scams.
at 6:24 p.m. et on monday, the openai newsroom account (@openainewsroom), which has nearly 54,000 followers, published a now-deleted post promoting a token called "$openai."
“we’re excited to announce $openai, a token that will bridge artificial intelligence and blockchain technology,” the post said. “all openai users are eligible to claim a portion of the initial supply of $openai tokens. holding $openai will give you access to all of our future testing initiatives.” the post also included a link to a fake openai website, which was not located at openai.com.
when i visited the website, i found that it contained a section to claim $openai cryptocurrency. after clicking the relevant button, the website asked me to connect my wallet.
as of press time, openai and social platform x have not responded to this. the openai news account has not published any posts explaining the incident. the account was launched earlier this month.
