recently, the opening ceremony of the 2024 autumn semester of nanhai buddhist college was held in sanya, hainan. member of the national committee of the chinese people's political consultative conference, vice president of the buddhist association of china, president of the hainan buddhist association, master yinshun, president of nanhai buddhist college, leaders of the hainan provincial united front work department and many guests came to the scene to send blessings and expectations to the new students. 131 undergraduates, 93 postgraduates from all over the country and 38 international students from cambodia and nepal attended the opening ceremony.

in his speech, president yin shun said that as a bridge connecting chinese and world buddhist cultures, nanhai buddhist college will continue to uphold the spirit of “embracing all rivers and being great because of its tolerance” and invite young students from all over the world.

he put forward three expectations for students' learning: first, they must persist in loving the country and religion, and guide the dreaming youth with correct faith. buddhism has always advocated patriotism, and buddhist education in the new era must integrate patriotism and religion into students' ideal pursuits. the college's "2355" project is to promote the deep integration of buddhism and the core socialist values by cultivating students' faith in the dharma and their responsibility to the country.
second, we must persist in diligent study and practice, and immerse our youth in wisdom with buddhism. freshmen should practice and seek knowledge at the same time, continue to study buddhist classics in depth, cultivate their minds, immerse themselves in buddhism, forge themselves in buddhist studies, learn from practice, learn from society, and achieve unity of knowledge and action, and apply what they have learned.
third, we must persist in exchanges and mutual learning, and embrace the brilliant youth with an open mind. yin shun said that with the advancement of the "belt and road" initiative, the college has become an important platform for the exchange of chinese and foreign buddhist cultures. he hopes that the majority of international students can integrate into chinese culture, become messengers of buddhist culture, and promote the widespread dissemination of buddhism around the world.
finally, president yinshun used the metaphor of "youth is a bodhi seed, full of hope" to encourage the freshmen to follow the buddhist teachings, bravely pursue their dreams, and shoulder the responsibility of inheriting and developing buddhism.
xu shishu, the second-level inspector of the united front work department of the hainan provincial party committee and the supervisor of nanhai buddhist college, pointed out in his speech that nanhai buddhist college, as the core institution of hainan buddhist community, shoulders the important task of cultivating high-quality buddhist talents. he emphasized that nanhai buddhist college should unswervingly follow the path of running a religious college with chinese characteristics, keep pace with the times, and deepen foreign exchanges.
xu shishu particularly mentioned that nanhai buddhist college should actively participate in the construction of hainan free trade port in the new historical stage, and use its unique geographical and policy advantages to create a holy place for international buddhist cultural exchanges. at the same time, he also encouraged the freshmen to cherish their study time at nanhai buddhist college, deeply cultivate precepts, concentration and wisdom, and become the backbone of promoting buddhism and serving the society.

at this opening ceremony, international students from nepal and cambodia also became the highlight of the ceremony. these young monks from afar, with the dream of blending chinese and foreign cultures, entered the hall of nanhai buddhist college. as the teacher representative said in his speech: "mountains and seas are not obstacles, eyes are filled with stars, thousands of miles are crossed, just for a supreme dharma affinity." this time, nanhai buddhist college has once again recruited 38 international students. they will work together with domestic students to explore the mysteries of buddhism and inject new vitality into the inheritance and development of buddhist culture.
