"there is a unique wine-making team called the 'august 1st' team at maotai distillery, and i spent my internship here. i remember when i reported for duty on the first day, i was deeply attracted by the big red slogan on the wall: 'come when called, fight when you come, and win when you fight,'" said li qianru.
all the members of the "august 1st class" were soldiers who once served the country in uniform. although they have left the army, the drying hall of the workshop has become their military camp training ground. they have to put items neatly, line up in order when eating, strictly follow the rules and regulations in production, and obey orders with strict discipline.
yan gang, a retired soldier who took the lead in forming the august 1st class, is a little thin, but his big hands are particularly prominent. the back of his hands are rough and cracked from years of labor, and there is a thick layer of calluses on the palms. he is a national model worker and the first chief brewer of moutai.
in 1978, vietnam provoked an armed conflict on the sino-vietnamese border. the 19-year-old yan gang participated in the self-defense counterattack against vietnam. after writing a short letter to his mother, he went to the battlefield.
"mom, the motherland needs me. i can't say whether i can come back, but i must be your excellent son and a brave soldier of the motherland. please take care of yourself."
later, in a battle, yan gang and his squad leader encountered fierce enemy artillery attack as soon as they arrived at the position. seeing a shell flying over yan gang's head, the squad leader pushed him away. when yan gang got out of the mud with his ears ringing and his head disoriented, he found that the squad leader had fallen in a pool of blood and would never wake up again...
li qianru remembered yan gang once told her that although decades had passed, he could not help but burst into tears whenever he thought of the brutal battlefield and the scene where his squad leader sacrificed himself to save others. those were his unforgettable youth years, when he and his comrades fought bravely in the hail of bullets, and many of his comrades died beside him and are buried in the southern border of the motherland.
"it is their sacrifice that brings peace to thousands of families. how can we not work hard?" li qianru said that in her heart, yan gang's story is red, the national flag is red, the party flag is red, and the august 1st army flag is red. she once thought that national defense was very far away from her, perhaps in the gobi desert, on the plateau, or on the border of the motherland. later, she discovered that it was in her heart. it was like a book, filled with bloody and turbulent years, and even more filled with countless true love, miracles and original intentions.
in 2023, the "soldier craftsman" project led by the "august 1st" class, as one of the "soldier + x" projects created by renhuai city to establish a national demonstration zone for high-quality development of veterans' affairs, successfully passed the on-site investigation and evaluation of the ministry of veterans affairs and became another innovative practice of moutai group to promote the high-quality development of veterans' affairs.
