ding kuiling, president of shanghai jiao tong university and academician of the chinese academy of sciences, delivered a speech entitled "dare to enter no man's land and climb to the commanding heights" at the opening ceremony for graduate students. he said that the graduate stage is a critical period for scientific research training and academic research, and it is also an important period for academic vitality to burst out and innovative achievements to be nurtured.
"at present, the international situation is complex and complicated. the scientific and technological revolution and the game between major powers are intertwined. the competition among countries in the field of science and technology is becoming increasingly fierce. they are all trying their best to find breakthroughs in innovation and seize the commanding heights in various fields." he suggested that students take the initiative to explore the unknown, dare to challenge difficult problems, climb to the top unremittingly, move towards the "no man's land", charge towards the "commanding heights", and realize the value of life in the process of serving the construction of a modern powerful country.
he encouraged students with the story of professor tsung-dao lee, an honorary professor of shanghai jiao tong university: "during my graduate studies, mr. tsung-dao lee would take the initiative to discuss some very cutting-edge and innovative issues with teachers every week. he often said, 'to seek knowledge, you need to learn. just learning to answer is not learning.' he told everyone not to be satisfied with acquiring existing knowledge and accepting ready-made answers, but to actively ask questions in order to innovate."

he said that the teachers and students of the tsung-dao lee college of shanghai jiao tong university are now aiming to break through fundamental scientific problems. some are committed to developing high-precision spectrometers to search for a second solar system in the vast universe; some are trying to develop topological quantum bits in order to realize practical quantum computing; and some are striving to reveal the deepest structure of matter through precise measurements of the properties of elementary particles... their footprints are in the sky and on the earth, looking for the connection between the largest and the smallest in the universe, constantly broadening the boundaries of human cognition of the universe and nature.
"at present, my country's scientific and technological innovation capabilities have been significantly improved, but many problems that restrict the output of original results, breakthroughs in key core technologies, and industrial innovation and development have not yet been solved. we need to forge ahead bravely." he encouraged the students to attack difficult problems with the courage to "dare to change the sun and the moon", strive to fill in the gaps, break the "bottleneck" shackles, and contribute to the realization of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and the promotion of high-quality development.
“innovation is always a matter of life and death. we cannot be satisfied with just doing our best, but must persist in trying until we can’t do anything more.” ding kuiling hopes that students at shanghai jiao tong university can cultivate the will to face difficulties and become more courageous after setbacks, and do research that ordinary people are unwilling to do; enhance their confidence in innovation, improve their multidisciplinary knowledge reserves and interdisciplinary thinking ability, and do research that ordinary people have never done; persist in accumulating core competitiveness through deep cultivation and cross-integration, do research that ordinary people cannot do, and overcome all obstacles and difficulties to achieve success.
