for mainland audiences, the most impressive things about xu jinjiang are his early film works.

some are arrogant, some are touching, some are vulgar, and some are hard to describe.

lu zhishen, leopard head, aobai...

the tall and mighty xu jinjiang has created many classic roles.

in hong kong movies, except for special roles, there are few who are taller than xu jinjiang.

in "prison on fire 2", chow yun-fat had to slightly raise his head to look at xu jinjiang.

i think his only shortcoming is that he looks a bit fierce. in 1982, he went to hong kong as an art student to develop his career and ended up acting in movies. during this period, xu jinjiang played many mainland roles and his righteousness moved the audience.

"li xiangdong" is one of them.

but this role is still relatively taboo even today.

the reason is simple:

after the 1984 hit "the flag soldiers", director mak dang-hung and screenwriter chan yan-kin decided to create a sequel, still with mainland criminals in hong kong as the protagonists. xu jinjiang became the male lead.

however, this time, mak dang-hung asked his younger brother mak dang-kit to direct the film, and the protagonists were changed from ordinary big circle boys to a few loyal and capable fighters. most importantly, they were originally mainland police officers.

"the legend of the condor heroes 2" continues the historical background of the first film. what is "excessive" is that the three protagonists this time - xu jinjiang, lin guobin and yuan richu are not only prisoners who were arrested and detained for sneaking into hong kong from the mainland, but they were also mainland public security officers. xu jing will play li xiangdong, the captain of the criminal police team, who fled to hong kong for "freedom" and is now imprisoned.

in order to crack down on the arrogant big circle gang, the hong kong police decided to let them "make meritorious service while serving their sentence" and promised to grant them legal status later.

li xiangdong thought for a moment and agreed.

this promise made them fall into eternal damnation.

because the police had no intention of fulfilling their promise from the beginning to the end.

it can be seen that mak dang-hung and chan yan-kin are "equally treated" -

if you want to “blacken” them all, blacken them all, no one can escape.

the other two leading actors, lam kwok-bun is a member of the cheng family team, and yuen yat-chul is a member of the yuen family team. he also has two older brothers, yuen woo-ping and yuen cheung-yan.

it is not difficult to see from the choice of actors that compared with the first part, the proportion of gun battle scenes and martial arts scenes in "the flag soldiers 2: divided into two route" has increased a lot. although both are commercial films, the second part has a stronger commercial flavor.

what's more, wan ziliang, who was very popular at the time, joined the cast and played the informant "dada".

the relationship between dada and li xiangdong is also a kind of emotional progression between hong kong people and mainlanders:

as a native hong konger, dada looked down on these "big circle boys" at first, so when he was ordered to take them to familiarize themselves with the environment, he often teased and insulted them. li xiangdong and others swallowed their anger and did not care about him. but when dada was in danger, li xiangdong saved him regardless of the past grudges, which changed dada's view of the "big circle boys".

unfortunately, no one had a good result.

in the film, dada decided to stop being an informant and immigrate abroad. not long after he set up this flag, he was kidnapped by daquan. they wanted him to reveal who the undercovers in the gang were (that is, li xiangdong and his three companions). dada, who was loyal to his friends, was beaten to a pulp but still refused to give in. as a result, he was beheaded...

the loyal li xiangdong was betrayed by the police while taking revenge, and his two brothers died tragically. he struggled to catch his superior, rebuked him for not taking mainlanders as hostages, and then shot him to death. he was also shot dead by the surrounding special police.

the hero's end was tragic and heroic.

while the protagonists in the first part of "the flag soldiers of guangdong and hong kong" were pure criminals, the three "flag soldiers" in the second part deviated from the traditional meaning. they just wanted to find a better living environment. each of them had extraordinary skills but ended up miserably, which made the audience at that time sigh.

the names of the characters jingsheng played by lam kwok-bun, xuejun played by yuan richu, and xiangdong played by xu jinjiang reveal the mainland's "temperament" of the time. the movie does not only show li xiangdong's personal heroism, but also gives jingsheng and xuejun a lot of roles.

jingsheng likes daquanzi's sister. his undercover identity is real, and his feelings are also real. this is destined to be a tragedy.

as a result, his identity was exposed during the decisive battle. he didn't want to kill the future "brother-in-law" in front of him, but xuejun wanted to kill him. when he supported the other party, the other party shot him before dying. they all died together, leaving only a crying girl.

during this period, xuejun met a dancing lady (played by wang xiaofeng). she treated xuejun as a rich man, but xuejun believed that he had found love. he took the stolen money away without telling his two brothers and wanted to run away with her. unexpectedly, after learning his identity (a member of the big circle gang, not an undercover agent), the other party called the police, which led to the police's pursuit. the money was gone, and the man ran away. this incident led to the big circle gang seeing the news about the dancing lady, and a fight broke out, and xuejun himself was killed on the spot.

the worst is li xiangdong——

he knew from the beginning that the police were using him, and he even knew that he would be abandoned by the police after the mission was over. but he had no choice, and he couldn't think of a better coping strategy.

on the one hand, he smuggled into hong kong just to live a good life. on the other hand, although the three of them had special skills, they came from the public security background and were unwilling and disdainful to commit crimes like other "big circle boys".

for the freedom he longed for and for true freedom, he had no choice but to cooperate with the police.

at this point, i actually feel that xu jinjiang and li xiangdong are somewhat similar:

although he was born in the mainland and had a good education, he was willing to play a supporting role for his own development and had to take on third-level films. the only thing that can be praised is his image of being "powerful but not lewd", and the actresses who have worked with him all praised him for never taking advantage of others during filming.

many years later, mr. xu jinjiang still felt painful when talking about this past event.

what's even more sad is that since then, xu jinjiang has mostly appeared in villain or ruffian roles. however, it was "li xiangdong" in this movie and "mao xiangyang" in "the legend of the condor heroes 3" that best showcased xu jinjiang's style.

in addition, the second part brings together many villain actors from hong kong films, including huang zhiqiang, cheng kui-an, han yisheng, chen deguang, jiang long, etc. these characters surround "li xiangdong", further highlighting the heroic and majestic image of this former public security officer.

after jackie chan continued filming "police story: super cop", due to the enthusiastic response, golden harvest decided to shoot a "super plan". the female lead was still michelle yeoh, the male lead was replaced by yu rongguang, and the second male lead was zhou huajian.

jackie chan and eric tsang made cameo appearances for a few minutes, but because the film did not contain enough "dragon" elements, the box office and reputation were not ideal.

the plot also follows the story of the female police officer in "super police". the male and female protagonists played by yu rongguang were originally police officers (armed police). the male protagonist went to hong kong to see the colorful world and then committed a crime. the female protagonist cooperated with the hong kong police to investigate and found that the criminal was her ex-boyfriend. she was in great pain...

it can be said that some hong kong films at that time alluded to the composition of the mainland's "big circle", so neither "super plan" nor the "provincial and hong kong flag soldiers" series could be released in the mainland.

"the king and the queen 3" later also inherited this character setting. the male protagonist played by andy lau is a retired veteran who fled to hong kong unjustly, but was pursued by the mainland police played by xu jinjiang.

but this one has a happy ending——

andy lau righteously told xu jinjiang that he was wronged and tried to show mercy several times. finally, xu jinjiang let andy lau go, and the male and female protagonists finally lived overseas.

this is the only good ending in the "provincial and hong kong flag soldiers" series.

it is also the last film in the series.

because when the third film was released in hong kong in 1989, not only did current events begin to change, but even gunfight films began to decline. hong kong audiences no longer liked to find satisfaction in describing the poor lives of mainlanders in hong kong. with 1997 approaching, many hong kong people began to worry about the future.

some other hong kong filmmakers have begun to tell the stories of family and country in their films, such as "all's well, ends well". they usually set up one or two negative characters and then denounced the other party as "not chinese". old hong kong people are also sensitive to the contradictions in their perception of the motherland, so luo dayou once mentioned "horse racing" and "comrades" in "queen's road east". it can be seen that the principle of "things smell good from a distance and smell bad near" applies to any relationship.

the third part of the "provincial and hong kong flag soldiers" series contains too many spoofs and prejudices, so i don't plan to tell it, or i will start a new story if i have the chance in the future.

the changing image of the hong kong police force in hong kong films is also worth exploring. for example, the police in the "hong kong police" series resorted to lynching and used undercover agents for clues. these behaviors cannot be said to be completely fabricated. in the gray area, many things are difficult to judge.

perhaps what is left to future generations is not always understanding, but correction.
