liu aihua, spokesperson, chief economist and director of the department of comprehensive statistics of the national economy of the national bureau of statistics, said at a press conference held by the state council information office that judging from the cpi data in august, the national cpi showed a seasonal increase on a month-on-month basis, and the year-on-year growth rate expanded compared with the previous month, affected by factors such as high temperature and rainy weather.
liu aihua further introduced the month-on-month and year-on-year changes and the main reasons for the changes:
from a month-on-month perspective, cpi rose by 0.4%, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous month. among them, food prices rose by 3.4%, affecting the cpi by about 0.6 percentage points month-on-month; non-food prices fell by 0.3%, affecting the cpi by about 0.24 percentage points month-on-month.

from a year-on-year perspective, cpi rose by 0.6%, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous month. food prices rose by 2.8% from the previous month, affecting the cpi increase by about 0.51 percentage points; non-food prices rose by 0.2%, affecting the cpi increase by about 0.13 percentage points.
among food items, the prices of fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and pork increased by 21.8%, 4.1%, and 16.1% respectively, while the prices of eggs, cooking oil, beef, mutton, and potatoes decreased year-on-year, with a decrease of 4%-14.5%. among non-food items, the price of services increased by 0.5%, and the increase rate fell by 0.1 percentage point. among them, the price of medical services increased by 1.9%, the price of educational services increased by 1.7%, and the price of household services increased by 1.6%. at the same time, the price of air tickets decreased by 11.9%, and the price of hotel accommodation decreased by 3.6%. among non-food items, the price of industrial consumer goods decreased by 0.4%, among which the price of gasoline decreased by 2.7%, the price of fuel-powered cars decreased by 6.4%, and the price of household daily necessities, interior decorations, and chinese medicinal materials increased by 1.1%-6.9%.
regarding the cpi trend in the next stage, liu aihua said that as the weather gradually turns cooler, the main flood season in my country ends, precipitation is decreasing, and the climate is suitable for vegetable growth, transportation and storage. vegetable supply is expected to increase. at the same time, considering the increase in holiday consumption demand during the mid-autumn festival and national day, vegetable prices may fall slightly; pig production capacity is currently being continuously reduced, and with the arrival of the traditional consumption peak season, pork prices may continue to rise. overall, food prices will remain stable. in terms of industrial consumer goods, energy prices are affected by international import factors, and downward pressure has increased. other industrial consumer goods are in sufficient supply and prices are expected to remain stable. in terms of service prices, affected by the mid-autumn festival and national day holiday effects, service prices are expected to rise overall.
"judging from the above factors, cpi is expected to rise moderately in the next stage," said liu aihua.
