it home reported on september 13 that the auto media theautopian published a blog post yesterday (september 12) that an unmodified fifth-generation toyota prius broke a new guinness world record. driven by wayne gerdes, the combined fuel economy average reached 93.158 mpg (39.6 km/l), beating gerdes' previous record by more than 20 percent.

it home note: the record was set at the end of a journey across the united states, starting from los angeles city hall and arriving at new york city hall, a total of approximately 3,211.7 miles, passing through areas with an altitude of up to 7,000 feet and temperatures as high as 105 degrees fahrenheit.

gerdes started his trip in los angeles, drove to lakewood, california, and from lakewood to flagstaff, arizona.

gerdes traveled through fort sumner, new mexico, and arrived in amarillo, texas, where he eventually had to stop for gas.

gerdes had achieved a cumulative 106.334 mpg by this point, but a trip to russell, arkansas, dropped that number to 98.023 mpg.

fuel economy dropped further on the trip to knoxville, tennessee, to a cumulative average of 94.010 mpg, but the trip from knoxville to winston-salem, north carolina, reversed the trend, with a cumulative average of 94.993 mpg.

the final leg of the trip, to new york city's city hall and a refueling stop in new jersey, almost settled the record, with an average fuel consumption of 93.158 mpg over the entire 3,211.7 miles.
