what is the format of the competition?

this year's world championship consists of three stages: the play-in stage, the swiss round stage, and the knockout stage (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals). see below for details of each stage.

play-in stage: september 25-29

there will be eight teams participating in the play-in round: the first seed of cblol and lla, the top two seeded teams of pcs and vcs, and the third seed of lec and lcs. the above teams will be divided into two groups and play a bo3 double elimination match. the winning team of each group will advance to the swiss round. the teams with a record of 1-1 in the loser group will play two by two to compete for the last two qualifying spots. in other words, there will be four teams advancing to the swiss round in the end!

swiss round: october 3-7; october 10-13

the four winning teams in the play-in matches will join the top two seeded teams from lec and lcs, as well as the top four seeded teams from lck and lpl. these sixteen teams will first be divided into four groups according to the seed ranking and drawn into eight pairs for bo1 matches: the first seed pool against the fourth seed pool, and the second seed pool against the third seed pool. in addition, teams from the same region will not be grouped together in the first round. seed pool composition:

● pool 1: lck1, lcs1, lec1, lpl1

● pool 2: lck2, lpl2, lcs2, lec2

● pool 3: lck3, lck4, lpl3, lpl4

● pool 4: teams that advance from the play-in round

after the first round, there will be a second round of draws, with teams with the same record competing against each other without any additional draw restrictions. according to this year's new competition system, teams will not face the same opponents. after that, three rounds of matches will be repeated according to the above process. teams will advance after three wins, or be eliminated after three losses.

in the end, eight teams will advance to the knockout stage. the early games will be played in a bo1 format, and all subsequent qualifying and elimination games will be played in a bo3 format. in the swiss round, the right to choose the side will be determined by the initial draw pool - the higher-ranked draw pool has the right to choose the side. if both teams come from the same draw pool, a coin toss will determine the order of side selection.

knockout stage: october 17-20 (quarterfinals); october 26-27 (semifinals); november 2 (championship final)

eight teams will compete in the knockout stage. this stage includes the quarterfinals, semifinals and the championship final. the tournament format will change to a single-elimination tournament, and all matches will be best-of-five. after the last day of the swiss round, the quarterfinal teams will be drawn on stage. when the draw is made, the team with a 3-0 record will play against the team with a 3-2 record. the remaining teams will play two-on-two.

the team that wins the final victory will become the 2024 global champion.
