zhang shanren (1726-1798), courtesy name zixiang, was a native of guixi, jiangxi province. he practiced taoism in longhu mountain since he was young and studied under zhang yulong, the heavenly master of the heaven. he was proficient in medicine. in 1755, he came to xin'an town to practice medicine. because of his noble medical ethics and superb medical skills, he was sought for treatment in an endless stream.

zhang shanren was keen on studying medical books and developed a crystal ointment to treat skin warts, sores, tumors, etc. the "xin'an town chronicles" recorded relevant cases, such as the xanthelasma of the wife of huai'an salt merchant cheng jinfang, the hemangioma of the son of suzhou painter xu yang, and the flat warts of the daughter of jiangning governor tuo yong. zhang shanren was kind and generous, and treated the poor for free. in memory of him, the people of xin'an town built the "zhang shanren temple".

mr. zhang passed on his medical skills and crystal ointment to his son-in-law zhou jinhe. zhou's descendants continued to improve them, and finally professor zhou dachun improved them and named them wu miao narcissus ointment. it was included in the "chinese pharmacopoeia" and was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of jiangsu province in 2009.
