the re-evaluation and re-understanding of the exploration area is of great significance to the increase of reserves.
the evaluation room of the exploration and development research institute (hereinafter referred to as the institute) of the zhundong oil production plant of xinjiang oilfield is responsible for the evaluation of 7,000 square kilometers of the zhundong area, the "three convexities, two concave areas and one belt". only through the evaluation and confirmation of proven reserves by scientific researchers can subsequent oil and gas development be carried out.
in recent years, researchers in the institute's evaluation office have responded to the challenges they face in their work with a united and hard-working attitude, re-evaluated oil-rich zones and re-recognized old oil fields, further confirmed the exploitation value of oil reservoirs in oil-rich zones, and consolidated the reservoir foundation of old oil fields.
“re-evaluation” confirms the exploitation value of oil-rich zones
"we who are engaged in exploration have a complex in our hearts. we will encounter difficulties, but we will never give up. if a person does not have this belief, he cannot do exploration," said cheng huanghui.
it is based on this belief that the fukang fault zone, which had been silent for several years, became "bustling" under the team led by cheng huanghui.
an oil-rich zone refers to a zone where oil and gas are relatively concentrated. the fukang fault zone, as the zone with the most concentrated oil and gas among the oil-rich zones, was explored as early as the 1990s. however, due to the unclear understanding of the structure of the fukang fault zone in the early stage and the limitations of exploration ideas, oil and gas exploration has never made major breakthroughs.
in 2019, cheng huanghui, then director of the evaluation office of the institute, led the team to start tackling the geophysical and geological integration project of the complex tectonic belt in front of the mountain - the processing and interpretation of three-dimensional seismic in the fukang fault zone, and re-evaluation of the oil reservoirs in the fukang fault zone.
reservoir evaluation is the timely probabilistic analysis of the possibility, characteristics, reserves, quality, etc. of oil and gas reservoir formation, as well as a comprehensive evaluation of engineering and economic aspects. reservoir re-evaluation is the re-evaluation of the reservoir due to unclear understanding of the reservoir in the early stage.
during this period, cheng huanghui combined geophysical exploration with geology. he and his team continued to study early data and repeatedly verified them.
the re-evaluation of the fukang fault zone was not smooth sailing. around new year's day 2021, the re-evaluation work encountered many difficulties, and the existing data contradicted the existing understanding. immediately, cheng huanghui and another team member dan shunhua went to beijing to consult experts, closed the office for 10 days, stayed up late every day until 12 o'clock, and worked all the time except for eating and sleeping. finally, the core structural problems were solved and a plan was formed.
over a two-year period, he led his team in many battles with external partners, and used geological thinking and seismic methods to coordinate the team in the deployment and demonstration of preliminary exploration wells, evaluation wells, and oil testing of old wells, ultimately proving that the oil-rich area of the fukang fault zone has mining value.
"at work, we are not afraid of problems, but we are afraid of not being able to find them. problems are wealth, and ideas become solutions," said cheng huanghui.

"re-understanding" consolidates the foundation for stable production of old oil fields
oilfield development is guided by knowledge. the preliminary preparations for oilfield development are very complex. the evaluation and understanding of reservoirs is an iterative process that requires all data to be linked together for analysis and research.
the junggar oilfield has undergone decades of exploration and development. with the deepening of development, the geological conditions have become more and more complex, the oil reservoirs have become more and more hidden, and the trend of resource quality deterioration has become more and more prominent year by year. it is difficult to solve the overall research and deep-seated contradictions of the zone by relying on traditional exploration and development methods, and its limitations have gradually become apparent.
for china national petroleum corporation's oil and gas development business, old oil and gas fields are the "fixing star" of crude oil production, and the output once accounted for more than 2/3. the huoshaoshan oilfield, shanan oilfield, and beisantai oilfield under the jurisdiction of the zhundong oil production plant of xinjiang oilfield company are all old oilfields that have been developed for more than 25 years and have entered the "double high" development stage as a whole, but their annual oil production accounts for 58.8% of the annual output of the entire plant.
the main development layer of shanan oilfield is the wutonggou formation, which has been developed for nearly 30 years and has an urgent need for successor resources. although there are sporadic oil wells in the upper jiucaiyuan formation, its complex structure and oil-water relationship have always been a tough nut to crack in the minds of explorers over the years and have been difficult to break through for many years.
in the eyes of zhang xiaohong, the head of the evaluation office of the institute, it is both a difficult problem and a potential area. for a long time, he traveled to various well-connected geological sections, consulted various materials, and explored the corresponding relationship between oil-bearing sand bodies, oil layer characteristics and controlling factors well by well. gradually, he memorized the core data, analysis and testing, well logging, oil testing and production testing data, and gradually constructed the spatial distribution of the jiucaiyuan formation oil reservoir in shanan oilfield in his mind.
in 2021, zhang xiaohong achieved a new breakthrough in the retest of the sq2370 well proposed by the jiucaiyuan formation in shanan oilfield, and obtained high-yield industrial oil flow, which broadened the new field of rolling exploration in the shallow layers of shanan oilfield and found favorable successor resources for the sustainable development of the oilfield.
the epidemic struck again in 2022. urumqi began to implement lockdown management from august 10, 2022, which was not lifted until december.
in order to ensure that the progress of work is not affected, zhang xiaohong chose to stay at work. during the lockdown, zhang xiaohong's one-year-old child, wife, and elderly in his family all had to go to the new control area for observation. he could only put his worries aside for the time being and comfort his family over the phone after a busy evening.
yu shaohui and wang ze from the evaluation room also took on the heavy burden of the evaluation room in the sprint stage at the end of the year. faced with various reporting materials pouring in, the two people cooperated and divided the work and worked hard in the unit day and night.
in 2022, the evaluation office achieved new breakthroughs in two blocks with a reserve increase of tens of millions of tons, the jiucaiyuan formation of the shanan oilfield in the beisantai uplift and the permian expansion of the beisantai oilfield, which greatly promoted the progress of exploration and evaluation work.

new reserves extend the lifeline of the oil region
the development of the oil region is inseparable from both the old oil fields as a ballast and the oil-rich belts as a potential area.
based on the concept of "efficient reserve increase and benefit evaluation", the evaluation office of the institute carries out benefit evaluation in three major areas: "high efficiency in middle and shallow layers", "deep scale" and "complex enrichment zones in front of mountains".
as of the first half of 2024, the institute's evaluation office has carried out fruitful work around oil-rich areas such as beisantai, shanan, huoshaoshan, and fukang fault zone. five advances have been made in reservoir evaluation: first, the detailed evaluation of reservoirs has been continuously deepened, and the geological reserves of petroleum in the upper urho formation of the permian in the di'nan 15 well area have been proved, laying a solid foundation for the large-scale development of the reservoir; second, new breakthroughs have been made in the re-recognition of old reservoirs, and 9 well layers of the triassic jiucaiyuan formation in the shanan oilfield have obtained industrial oil flow, and the potential for continued development of the reservoir has been further revealed; third, the integration of geology and engineering has achieved remarkable results, and the evaluation well bei 104 of the jurassic toutunhe formation loose sandstone heavy oil reservoir in the bei 10 well area has obtained industrial oil flow, further expanding the scale of geological reserves; fourth, the rolling exploration of the complex structure of the fukang fault zone in front of the mountain has made new progress, and 2 wells and 3 layers have obtained industrial oil flow, showing the exploration potential of multiple systems in this area; fifth, the rolling exploration of the water-sensitive thin reservoirs of the triassic jiucaiyuan formation in the xiquanbi rise has achieved new results, and the evaluation well fu 191 has obtained industrial oil flow, confirming the potential for efficient development of such reservoirs.
the extension of the oilfield lifeline also requires facing up to the difficulties encountered in practice.
at present, in the exploration and evaluation of oil reservoirs, there are problems such as stagnant data quality and prominent difficulty in exploration and evaluation. among them, the seismic data quality of fukang fault zone and baijiahai uplift is poor, and the prediction of structure and high-quality reservoirs is difficult to implement, which restricts the discovery of oil and gas; the prediction of thin reservoirs of h5 and h3-h1 of pingdiquan formation in huoshaoshan oilfield is restricted by the poor quality of seismic data, and rolling exploration is difficult.
in response to this problem, the institute has proposed corresponding countermeasures. the institute will make every effort to promote the benefit exploration and evaluation, highlight the benefit evaluation of the middle and shallow layers, strengthen the key technology research of the exploration and evaluation of deep-layer scale and complex enrichment zones in front of the mountains, deepen geological understanding, strengthen reservoir anatomy, and continuously promote the integration of exploration and evaluation capacity.
the re-evaluation of oil-rich zones and the re-recognition of old oil fields have further tapped the potential of oil reservoirs and laid a solid foundation for the stable and increased production of oil fields. the researchers of the institute, wearing red work clothes and concentrating on the re-evaluation of oil fields, have also painted a bright "oil red" for zhundong.
