south korean regulator: telegram has complied with requests to remove "deep fake" pornographic content

it home reported on september 5 that according to yonhap news agency, on tuesday local time, south korea’s media regulator said that the encrypted messaging application telegram has deleted some deepfake pornographic content on the platform as requested and apologized for its response to sexual crimes.

the korea communications commission (kcsc) said a representative of telegram's east asia branch had sent an email to the commission,confirmed that the company had removed 25 items of sexually exploitative material from its platform in compliance with the kcsc's request.

telegram also apologized for the miscommunication caused by the above issue and provided a dedicated email address for future communications with media watchdogs. the korea communications commission said it had asked telegram to set up a hotline with south korean authorities to better deal with illegal content on the platform. "we hope to strengthen our cooperation with (telegram), starting with a dedicated email address and opening a hotline to address the circulation of deep fake sexual exploitation materials and ultimately eradicate digital sex crime content."

according to previous reports from it home,on september 2, south korean police announced that they had launched a pre-trial investigation into telegram for allegedly allowing deep fake sexual crimes.there are some chat rooms on telegram that are suspected of creating and disseminating "deep fake" pornographic content with doctored photos of korean women. the police have therefore conducted a preliminary investigation into the telegram corporate entity, suspecting it of instigating "deep fake" pornographic crimes.

according to data disclosed by south korea's "national investigation headquarters", from the 26th to the 29th of last month, local authorities collected a total of 88 reports involving deep fakes and sexual crimes and identified 24 suspects.
