during his visit to malawi from august 26 to 31, unicef ambassador wang yuan noticed that after receiving training from the aid project, local people gradually learned how to take better care of their children. "when a mother prepared lunch for her child, she also took into account balanced nutrition under limited conditions."
in 2019, cyclone idai hit malawi hard, affecting nearly 1 million people, half of whom were children. the chinese government provided us$1 million to unicef to help affected children and families resume normal life.
"we are very grateful for china's support in providing humanitarian assistance to children and families affected by cyclone idai, and look forward to continued cooperation with china," said gerrit maritz, unicef acting representative in malawi. after being hit by cyclone idai in 2019, malawi also experienced a series of climate-related disasters, including tropical storm ana in 2022, tropical cyclone freddy in 2023, and the current drought and food insecurity caused by el niño. it is understood that the china international development cooperation agency has provided financial assistance to unicef for children's projects in 22 african and asian countries, including malawi. these projects cover education, emergency response, immunization, malnutrition improvement and maternal and child health. recently, the two sides are about to start projects in cambodia and myanmar, and the scope of cooperation is expanding.
