xinhua news agency, nanjing, september 3 (reporters qiu bingqing and lu huadong) china has for the first time released a list of 2,590 american aviation heroes who fought against the japanese aggression. the relevant information includes the names, positions, and time of sacrifice of the heroes.
on september 3, the nanjing anti-japanese aviation martyrs memorial hall announced this list of heroes and martyrs through the official website of the sun yat-sen mausoleum administration.
on the same day, the memorial hall also held a ceremony to inscribe the name of jack w. hammel, an american pilot who died in china. "jack w. hammel" became the latest name on the monument. in 1945, hammel was killed in jiangxi province when his fighter plane was hit by japanese ground fire.
it is understood that during the war, the chinese air force received support from international aviation fighters from the united states and other countries, and thousands of chinese and foreign aviation fighters sacrificed their lives. the chinese and american people shared the same hatred of the enemy in the fight against japanese fascism, withstood the test of blood and fire, and forged a deep friendship.

"it is hoped that the release of this list will be able to gather forces from all sides at home and abroad, further strengthen the collection and research of historical materials on american aviation heroes who fought against the japanese invaders, improve the existing biographical information on heroes as much as possible, discover and correct existing information errors on the monument, and find the missing information on american aviation heroes who fought against the japanese invaders, so as to make this list more complete," said dou ruoqi, a staff member of the memorial.
in 2017, when hamel's relatives and friends visited the memorial, they found that hamel's name was not on the monument to heroes in the museum, and expressed their hope to have his name engraved on it. with the active coordination of the chinese embassy in the united states and the us-china aviation heritage foundation, more information about hamel was successfully found, meeting the conditions for engraving his name.
in april this year, the nanjing anti-japanese aviation martyrs memorial hall released information about 1,468 chinese anti-japanese aviation heroes. after the information was released, more than 100 relatives of anti-japanese aviation heroes contacted the memorial hall, and nearly 40 relatives came to the memorial hall to pay homage. after strict verification and comparison, the information of 18 chinese anti-japanese aviation heroes has been corrected.
the nanjing anti-japanese aviation martyrs memorial hall, located at the northern foot of purple mountain in nanjing, is the first international anti-japanese aviation martyrs memorial hall in china. it houses rich historical materials on the joint fight against the japanese invaders by the air forces of china, the soviet union, the united states and other countries during world war ii. the names of nearly 4,300 chinese and foreign anti-japanese aviation martyrs are engraved on the monument to heroes in the memorial hall.
