israel's traditional drone capabilities are not weak, but these equipment can no longer adapt to the latest battlefield requirements.

according to a report on the stars and stripes website on august 29, a person familiar with the matter told the israeli newspaper globes that the defense research and development directorate of the israeli ministry of defense is preparing a tender worth hundreds of millions of shekels to be issued in the coming weeks to purchase 20,000 israeli-made drones. the winning company will provide various types of drones, including attack drones, reconnaissance and intelligence drones, and deliver them in batches within five years.

it is estimated that several israeli companies will participate in the bidding, including dronix, kestender, robotican, tehiru, heven uav and copterpix.

the tender was launched because there was an urgent need to use drones for urban warfare in parts of the gaza war, and the idf was not yet ready for it.

drones are changing the face of the battlefield, as seen in ukraine.

in order for israeli industry to get up to speed, domestic companies are required to set up production lines and recruit enough skilled workers with the expertise and skills relevant to the mission. therefore, it is believed that when the tender is announced, the supply of drones will be medium- to long-term rather than immediate delivery.

as far as is known, the price the idf is asking for could still change, but it ranges from $2,700 to $5,400 per aircraft, which many companies consider too low.

the low price demanded by the idf reduces the likelihood of bids from israeli defense technology giants such as elbit systems and rafael advanced defense systems ltd.

one of the israeli companies expected to participate in the idf drone tender is tel aviv-based kestender, which already supplies drones to the idf as well as to civilian installations such as offshore gas rigs. it produces relatively cheap drones such as the wolverine, a multi-purpose drone that the idf can attach thermal imagers, weapons, speakers or door-opening arms, among other things.
