while special ceiling treatments are most common in entryways, living rooms, and bedrooms, kitchens can also be a great choice for adding a feature ceiling. artist jasmine pannu proved this when she remodeled the kitchen of a client. “the space was well laid out, but my client felt that something was missing to make it feel warm, inviting, and beautiful,” jasmine explained, adding that the mural cost less than $100 and added personality to the kitchen of this “forever home.”

the indoor flowers match the outdoor scenery.

one of her favorite spots in the client's home was the balcony off the kitchen, and she was especially excited to bring some foliage from that area back home.

“i consulted with my client and went paint shopping with her for paint colors that referenced her existing furniture, artwork, and the character of the space,” jasmine explains. the two selected several sample-size paints in blues and greens, including benjamin moore’s celtic folklore, grenada green, bluebell island, and surf city.

if you're going to paint a mural, preparation is key.

jasmine offers several tips for those who want to create a similar project. first, cover every surface in the room before you begin. (jasmine and her client did this together.) second, buy some chalk to outline the shapes you want — it costs less than $5, jasmine says, but the payoff is huge. third, choose a matte paint for the ceiling mural. fourth, stretch and rest.

overall, the project took five days and completely transformed the kitchen. it draws the eye upward, making the space feel taller, and has a slight overlap on the sides, making the soffit on the right side of the kitchen look seamless to the ceiling. even better, the homeowner and her friends and family love it.
