Starting from the Lianhuo Expressway Salt Lake Service Area and traveling 7 to 8 kilometers deep into the Gobi Desert in the north, you can see 124 white "wind power giants" standing on the wasteland. The 110-meter-high hub is equivalent to more than 30 floors, and the nearly 100-meter-long blades rotate against the wind.
It is equipped with the country's most advanced laser radar wind measurement system, which can send feedback in advance from 200 meters away. The wind turbine can respond by changing angle and frequency before it comes into contact with the wind, thereby achieving efficient use of wind energy.
On August 26, the "Chasing the Wind and the Sun to See Xinjiang" all-media reporting team visited the Huadian North Xinjiang Urumqi 1 million kilowatt wind and solar base located in Dabancheng District, Urumqi. From January to July this year, the base has generated a total of 1.68 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity, saving 510,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.25 million tons.

Huadian Northern Xinjiang Urumqi 1 million kilowatt wind and solar project is the first batch of national "Shagohuang" large-scale wind and solar photovoltaic base projects to be completed and connected to the grid in Xinjiang. It is located in Dabancheng District, the "Wind Valley of China", and has built 800,000 kilowatts of wind power and 200,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power, with two energy storage stations of 20 megawatts/40 megawatt hours and 5 megawatts/10 megawatt hours. The project is distributed in 10 plots in Urumqi County and Dabancheng District, and will be connected to the grid for power generation on June 30, 2023.
Here, the desolation and barrenness of the Gobi Desert and the advanced, energy-efficient technology form a sharp contrast, yet they are perfectly integrated.
Shi Xiaoliang, deputy general manager of Xinjiang Huadian Weihuliang New Energy Co., Ltd., introduced that since the project started construction in March 2022, it has widely applied national key energy-saving and low-carbon technologies, applied ten new technologies in the construction industry, and 25 "five new" technologies in the power industry to achieve the purpose of reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and saving construction time. Through innovative management models, it set a record of eight wind turbines hoisted in a single day in Xinjiang, and fully connected to the grid for power generation only 15 months later. At the same time, as a "Shagohuang" project, photovoltaic sand control and "desert soilification" ecological restoration technologies were also introduced. By raising the photovoltaic panels to achieve "pastoral and light complementarity", the project explored experimental spraying of fungi to form alkaline shells and other measures to carry out wind power photovoltaic sand control, wind prevention, and grass fixation.
In the Gobi Desert more than 30 kilometers away from here, the Xinjiang Huadian Dabacheng 500,000-kilowatt wind power project began construction in July and is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of this year. It can add 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually and save 360,000 tons of standard coal.
Shi Xiaoliang introduced that at present, Xinjiang Huadian Weihuliang New Energy Co., Ltd. has a total of 21 wind power and photovoltaic stations, which are distributed in Urumqi, Turpan, Changji, Korla, Aksu and other cities in southern and northern Xinjiang. In the next step, the company will continue to conscientiously implement the decisions and arrangements of the Party Committee and Government of the Autonomous Region and the Party Group of the Group Company, take the promotion of high-quality development as the primary task, continue to carry out the "Green Energy Action", and strive to promote green and low-carbon transformation to create good "scenery" in the north and south of Tianshan Mountain.
