Since 2021, Suining County has taken advantage of the national, provincial and municipal policies of "replacing plastic, steel and concrete with bamboo" to establish a leading group for the development of the southern bamboo industry and a southern bamboo industry development center. With the efforts of the whole county, a series of effective measures have been introduced to promote the development of the southern bamboo industry. In just two years, the comprehensive benefits of the county's southern bamboo industry have soared from 3.12 billion yuan to 5.38 billion yuan, and are expected to reach 6.7 billion yuan in 2024. In 2028, it will become one of the "National Demonstration Counties for the Development of Ten Billion-level Bamboo Industry".
On July 17, the provincial bamboo industry high-quality development on-site promotion meeting was held in Suining, and more than 130 participants experienced the booming southern bamboo industry in Suining County. "Although I stayed in Suining for less than two days, as it was my first time to Suining, I not only witnessed Suining's unique forest ecological scenery, but also tasted a feast of the southern bamboo industry." On August 26, 40 days had passed. Boss Deng, who lives in the provincial capital Changsha, still remembers it vividly. He is overwhelmed with emotion when recalling every little thing he saw and heard in Suining.
Suining, a land full of bamboo charm, is striding forward on the road of high-quality development of the southern bamboo industry with a high-spirited attitude.

From July 16 to July 17, Mr. Deng, who wanted to invest in the bamboo industry, was invited to Suining to attend the on-site promotion meeting for the high-quality development of the bamboo industry in the province. "It was an eye-opener. Just from the meeting arrangements, I understood what 'unique' and 'well-intentioned' meant. Even the guest cards, attendance cards and work cards used in the meeting were made of bamboo, and the word 'bamboo' ran through the whole process!" said Mr. Deng. According to him, all the videos and songs played in the hotel were related to bamboo; the hotel's daily necessities, from toothbrushes, cups to towels, paper towels, slippers, pillowcases, chair cushions, etc., were all bamboo products; on the dining table, bamboo shoots dishes played the leading role, including winter bamboo shoots fried with bacon, fried eggs with bamboo shoots, fried bamboo shoots with oil, fried bamboo shoots with bamboo shoots and meat, and various bagged bamboo shoot delicacies, all of which were delicious in color, aroma and taste; at the venue, the tables, chairs and benches were also bamboo products, the tablecloths were made of bamboo fiber, and even the shells of notebooks and fountain pens were made of bamboo.
Zhang Zongfan, a national inheritor of Baoqing bamboo carving who lives in Shaoyang, uses his summer vacation every July to go to Suining to look for bamboo that is about four years old as carving materials. As a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal CPPCC, he was invited to visit the "Nanzhu Industry Products Exhibition Hall" located in the Yuanjiatuan National Wood and Bamboo Industry Demonstration Park. "After watching the exhibition, I was reluctant to go out. From this exhibition, I once again realized the true meaning of the phrase 'the life of art will always exist in the lives of the people'." Zhang Zongfan said with emotion. In this exhibition hall, he saw bamboo made into Western-style tableware, environmentally friendly shopping baskets, electronic mice, USB flash drives, travel cups, glasses cases, jewelry boxes, mobile phone cases, mobile phone cases, chess, go, tea cups, sports skateboards, etc., and each product was so eye-catching and touching.
One of the interpreters of this conference, Yang Huiyun, is a genuine Miao girl. She was responsible for the interpretation of the Chimutan Bamboo Science Popularization Base. This was the most content-intensive, longest-lasting, and longest-distance interpretation of the entire conference, but she memorized the entire 2,500-word interpretation the night before. On July 17, she was standing tall and graceful under the scorching sun, with a fluent voice and a polite attitude. There was no lag or mistake in the entire interpretation, which won the praise of all the participants. During the interpretation, she said just right, "I am the daughter of the people of Suining, and also the daughter of bamboo", which made the on-site personnel unforgettable about the bamboo culture of Suining that has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
"Without bamboo, I wouldn't be where I am today," said Tao Yongxi, winner of the Zhang Tianyi Children's Literature Award and the Bing Xin Children's Literature Award. He was born in Shuikou Township, known as the "Suining Bamboo Sea", and his family was poor since childhood. When he wanted to study as a child, his parents' answers were either "You go pick bamboo hemp to sell yourself" or "You go dig bamboo shoots to sell yourself." At that time, bamboo hemp was the best papermaking material, and winter bamboo shoots were a delicacy for city dwellers. Turning these two things into cash was the most common source of income for many families. The young Tao Yongxi relied on the hard work of selling bamboo hemp and bamboo shoots to turn himself into a reader, and eventually grew into a nationally renowned children's literature writer. In recent years, witnessing the high-quality development of Suining's southern bamboo industry, witnessing the bamboo that once saved people from fire and water has derived six major bamboo industries: bamboo-wood composite panels, bamboo substrates, bamboo tableware, bamboo skateboards, bamboo chopsticks, and bamboo shoots processing. There are 34 kinds of bamboo products, which are exported to more than 30 countries and regions including Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States. Tao Yongxi was delighted and sighed: "Bamboo may know me, but I no longer know bamboo."
During the on-site promotion meeting for the high-quality development of the bamboo industry in the province, several passages echoed for a long time at the meeting site:
"Since ancient times, people in Suining have eaten rice made from southern bamboo, worn clothes made from southern bamboo, read books made from southern bamboo, made money from southern bamboo, and enjoyed the blessings of southern bamboo," said Tang Xuejun, director of the Southern Bamboo Industry Office of Suining County.
"Half of the world's container bottom plates are produced by our CIMC, and Suining contributes one-sixth of the world's total," said He Wenfeng, deputy general manager of Hunan CIMC New Materials Technology Co., Ltd.
"Our Jiutong company will help Suining become a pioneer in the era of 'replacing plastic with bamboo', 'replacing steel with bamboo' and 'replacing concrete with bamboo'," said Li Hongjie, chairman of Hunan Jiutong Bamboo-based Composite Materials Co., Ltd.
"The 800,000 mu of southern bamboo resources are Suining's most important ecological barrier and the most valuable resource for promoting the efficient transformation of green mountains and clear waters into gold and silver mountains. By 2025, Suining's bamboo forest area and the number of standing bamboos will be firmly in the forefront of the province. Southern bamboo processing will become a regional center in the province and will become one of the key counties for the national southern bamboo industry." She Zhiyun, secretary of the Suining County Party Committee, declared.
