From August 22 to 23, the final of the 10th National College Students' Statistical Modeling Competition, guided by the Statistical Education and Training Center of the National Bureau of Statistics and hosted by the Chinese Society of Statistical Education, was held at the Chang'an Campus of Xi'an University of Finance and Economics.
Mao Youfeng, President of the Chinese Society of Statistical Education and Director of the National Applied Statistics Professional Degree Graduate Education Steering Committee, and Yang Tao, Secretary of the Party Committee of Xi'an University of Finance and Economics, attended the summary meeting and award ceremony and delivered speeches. The summary meeting and award ceremony was hosted by Di Wei, Deputy Director of the Statistical Education and Training Center of the National Bureau of Statistics.
On the 22nd, 63 participating teams in the undergraduate group and 34 participating teams in the graduate group of this year's National College Student Statistical Modeling Competition held on-site defenses.
At the summary meeting and award ceremony on the morning of the 23rd, Mao Youfeng delivered a speech on behalf of the Chinese Society of Statistics Education and the organizing committee of the competition. He pointed out that since its inception, the National College Student Statistical Modeling Competition has experienced 15 years of vigorous development and has become one of the most influential and valuable events in the field of statistics in my country. This year's competition has achieved innovative breakthroughs in many aspects, the scale of the competition and social influence have continued to increase, the theme of the competition is closely linked to the pulse of the times, the level of students' competition tasks has been continuously improved, and the organization and management of the competition, and the evaluation standards have been scientifically optimized. He hopes that the Chinese Society of Statistics Education will work with experts, scholars, and instructors to create and protect the golden signboard of the statistical discipline competition, the Modeling Competition, and hopes that young students will continue to take responsibility for realizing Chinese-style modernization.
Yang Tao delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer. He said that the school will take this competition as an opportunity to give full play to the positive role of the statistical modeling competition in promoting interdisciplinary integration, cultivating innovative talents, promoting statistical education reform and serving social and economic development, and make greater and new contributions to the modernization of national statistics under the new era and new situation.
Fang Xiangzhong, as the leader of the judging panel, reviewed and summarized the competition. He fully affirmed the quality of the entries and the on-site defense performance of the participating teams, and objectively and impartially pointed out some shortcomings of the entries and directions for improvement.
Since the competition started in February this year, a total of 21,386 teams from 802 colleges and universities across the country, with 64,158 college students, have participated in the competition. After the school competition selection, provincial competition selection, national competition communication review, and on-site meeting review, a total of 100 teams were selected to enter the defense competition, and finally 20 first prizes and 13 second prizes were awarded to the graduate group; 40 first prizes and 23 second prizes were awarded to the undergraduate group.
The National Undergraduate Statistical Modeling Competition has been held every two years since 2009, and will be held annually starting from the 7th competition in 2021. The competition aims to promote a good atmosphere for learning and applying statistics among college students, promote attention to hot and difficult issues in the economy and society, adapt to the requirements of colleges and universities and statistical departments for the training of statistical talents in the era of big data, improve college students' ability in data mining, data analysis, and the use of statistical methods and computer technology to process data, strengthen their awareness of innovative thinking, and help promote the modernization of statistics reform.
