Two years ago, Angelina Murphy and Skylar Johnson were living with her mother and looking for a home of their own. With a tight budget, they specifically looked for a home they could renovate themselves to save money. With Johnson's background in contracting and Murphy's passion for learning, they decided to purchase this 1,121 square foot, two-bedroom home in Los Angeles.
“This house was definitely in need of a major overhaul,” Murphy begins. “The house is located on the most beautiful tree-lined street we’ve ever seen, in a neighborhood that was perfect for us. It was built in 1950, and we loved the vintage charm: the original milk door, the plant windows, the built-in bookcases, the spacious backyard. We immediately saw all the potential it had and fell in love with it.”
The couple didn’t fool themselves; they knew the renovation would cost a lot of money, but since they were going to do the work themselves, they knew they could afford the project. “Since Skyler’s business had pretty much ground to a halt during the pandemic and I was working less from home, we both had a lot of free time to devote to the renovation,” Murphy explains.
“It took five months of evenings and weekends before we finally moved in! We documented the entire renovation process on our TikTok and our first video went viral with millions of views. Having people cheering us on, giving us advice, and pushing us to update definitely kept us accountable and motivated because it was exhausting to demolish, sand, frame, paint, etc. almost every day. But in the end, it made it all the more special because we made our house a home with our own hands.”
While the couple has made amazing progress on the house, the work is never completely finished. But you can follow their ongoing updates on their TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube accounts.
