As September approaches, it is time for college freshmen to register. This year, some media have noticed that party and government officials from the students' hometowns have sent off the freshmen in the form of "freshman's first lesson" and expressed their hometown's good wishes.
In Lanxi, Zhejiang, the municipal party secretary Dai Chong gave the first lesson to college freshmen on the theme of "Love the Party, Love the Country, Love the Hometown", and advised the college students to "go far, pursue the ultimate excellence, learn and practice, forge ahead with determination, and become 'promising young people' who move mountains and fill seas."
Dongyang City, also a county-level city in Zhejiang Province, held the first class for college freshmen for the fifth time since 2019. In his speech, Lou Langjian, secretary of the municipal party committee, expressed his expectation for college freshmen: "Dedicate your 'hot love' to the mountains and rivers of the motherland, and integrate your 'hot heart' into the hot land of your hometown."
The Xinyi Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government of Guangdong Province sent off the college freshmen for the third year. According to local media reports, the theme of this year's "new college students" farewell party is "difficulties and setbacks." Gong Qing, secretary of the Xinyi Municipal Party Committee, said: "The ultimate difference between people often lies in whether they can maintain their determination when facing setbacks, difficulties and adversity."
The local officials sending new college students to school reminded people of the "Preface to Sending Off Ma Sheng from Dongyang" written by the Ming Dynasty writer and politician Song Lian to Ma Junze, a student of the Imperial College. After Song Lian retired and returned to his hometown, Ma Junze came to visit him, so he wrote this message to introduce his learning experience and attitude to encourage the younger generation to study hard.
A commentator from Zhejiang Province's media "Chao News" commented: The excellent traditional values of the Chinese people, such as attaching importance to education, supporting younger generations, caring about their hometowns, and not forgetting their roots, have always been passed down. Back then, "sending Dongyang Ma students" and now "sending college freshmen" in various places are an echo that transcends time and space.
The Paper also commented that this is an attempt to recreate a classic hometown connection. "A farewell party is a very formal ceremony to express blessings from their hometown and to re-mark their hometown for them."
Of course, as a responsibility of local officials, these activities to send off new students also expressed their expectation that young people would "remember the source of water and never forget their hometown". For example, Lanxi, Zhejiang not only prepared backpacks with the word "Lanxi" printed on them and notebooks with the word "Shibali" printed on them, but also two small cans of water from the local Lanjiang River and soil from Hengshan.
The "School Farewell Ceremony" for the 2024 college freshmen in Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province is divided into six chapters: inheritance ceremony, coming-of-age ceremony, tuition ceremony, classmate ceremony, hometown ceremony, and school farewell ceremony. 13 "seed" representatives from various professional categories entered the venue under the guidance of teachers and swore, "I am a Zhuji student, and I start from my hometown."
The 2024 New College Students Departure Ceremony in Taishun County, Zhejiang Province also included a lottery session. Students who drew the "ticket home" prize can get free tickets and air tickets to go home during college. Those who drew the "invite classmates to visit Taishun" prize can bring their classmates back to their hometown, and their hometown will arrange for their food, accommodation and transportation.
It is worth noting that the above activities have been incorporated into the local talent work and become part of the local "talent war". In the activities of Taishun County, the local government issued the "14520" plan, which declared "I love you forever" to young talents in the name of the establishment of the county in the third year of Jingtai in the Ming Dynasty (1452), and will attract 14,520 talents within 5 years. The local government also formed a "college student peer liaison group" to build a close network of contacts for students abroad, gathering talents with affection and attracting talents with talent.
These places that hold activities to send off college freshmen are not big cities with strong talent absorption capabilities. However, by focusing on attracting young people, these "small places" have created a unique "talent highland". In 2023, Taishun County will introduce 4,145 new college students, 78 master's and doctoral talents, and 19 provincial and municipal doctoral innovation stations.
The “Talent Express” program in Lanxi, Zhejiang, provides a resettlement subsidy of a minimum of 10,000 yuan and a maximum of 1 million yuan, depending on the level of talent introduced.
In this regard, a commentary published by Red Star News believes that: "After the local government has completed the 'first lesson for freshmen', there are other 'lessons' to follow. For example, it should consider providing guarantees from the perspective of system construction, effectively carry out school-local cooperation, and provide financial assistance to outstanding college students during their studies; through institutional measures, link up with enterprises to provide internship opportunities for college students who have not yet graduated, and provide employment platforms and related services for college students who have already graduated to give back to their hometowns and return home without worries."
A commentary article in Chao News also believes that college students are the society's reserve talents and will become the pillars of all walks of life in the future. The "first lesson" in various places also fully reflects the respect, recognition, love, cherishing, nurturing and use of talents.
