Recently, the 17th International Geoscience Olympiad 2024 Global Finals ("Boya 1909" Cup) was held in Beijing. Mentougou District is the only venue for the field examination of this competition. Relying on the rich geological resources in the region, nine locations became designated examination sites for the finals, providing examination venues and conditions for 136 participating candidates from 35 countries and regions around the world.
It is reported that the International Geoscience Olympiad is an Olympic competition for middle school students organized by the International Geoscience Education Organization. It is committed to selecting and training a group of outstanding middle school students who love earth science, continuously providing successors for the development of China's earth science disciplines, and promoting the popularization of earth science. This year, a mainland Chinese university (School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University) hosted the event for the first time.
Many test sites of the Geological Olympiad in Mentougou District are stratigraphic sites from different periods. For example, Huiyu Village in Junzhuang Town has a large number of Carboniferous and Permian sandstones, which preserve terrestrial plant fossils dating back 200 to 300 million years. The Xiaweidian area in Miaofengshan Town has experienced multiple periods of sea transgression and regression and sedimentary interruptions in geological history, and is an important area for studying paleogeography and paleoclimatology. Malan Loess is one of the names of the Quaternary Loess periods in China, and the standard section site is on the northern slope of Zhaitangchuan.
As the capital's ecological conservation area, Mentougou District will take advantage of this event to give full play to the region's resource advantages and continue to develop, protect and utilize regional geological science resources.
