IT Home reported on August 24 that Sony issued a press release yesterday (August 23), announcing that it is developing the "Soneium™" blockchain with the goal of accelerating the popularization of Web 3 applications.

The project is being promoted by Sony Blockchain Solutions Lab, a subsidiary of Sony, which is headquartered in Singapore and chaired by Jun Watanabe, and hopes to explore building a Web 3 infrastructure network.

Soneium plans to be a public, universal network that aims to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 by fostering creativity and openness.

IT Home learned from the report that the Soneium project utilizes Optimism OP Stack technology, which is a Layer 2 solution designed to improve the scalability of the Ethereum blockchain, reduce transaction costs and increase speed.

Soneium is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), enabling smart contracts to be executed efficiently and securely. The network plans to launch its test network in the coming weeks, along with technical documentation and a software development kit (SDK).
