On the 21st local time, Russian Defense Minister Belousov congratulated the 9th Independent Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of Russia for capturing Novgorodskoye in Donetsk (called "New York Town" by the Ukrainian side) and awarded medals to the officers and soldiers of the unit. How much strategic value does this New York Town have, and what impact will the Russian army's capture of the town have on the war situation in eastern Ukraine?

Russia's "Viewpoint" reported on the 21st with the title "Occupation of New York Town Opens the Way to the West for the Russian Army" that the strategic importance of the Russian army's control of New York Town cannot be overemphasized. This is one of the turning points of the entire conflict. New York Town is located about 70 kilometers north of Donetsk, southern Chasov Yar and about 10 kilometers west of Gorlovka in eastern Ukraine. New York Town was allegedly founded by Mennonites during the reign of Catherine the Great. It has nothing to do with New York City in the United States, but how it came to be called "New York" is a mystery. After World War II, the village was renamed Novgorodskoye, and in 2021 the Ukrainian authorities renamed it New York Town. New York Town is a high ground that has been a core of the eastern fortress area of Ukraine for many years. The entire Gorlovka can be observed from there. The Ukrainian army has been shelling Gorlovka from here since 2014.

Russian media said that the town of New York is particularly important to all Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk direction, even more important than Avdeyevka. According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia on the 21st, Russian military expert Anatoly Matvichuk said that after the Russian army occupied the town of New York, the Ukrainian army would lose the opportunity to strengthen its defense in the entire southern direction of Donetsk. For the Ukrainian army, the main significance of holding the town of New York and Toretsk is that this position is a shield south of Konstantinovka, and Konstantinovka is an important logistics hub for the entire Donetsk Ukrainian army cluster and a major supply and transit point. The capture of the town of New York will enable the Russian army to launch an attack on Konstantinovka. At the same time, if necessary, the Russian army can increase supplies and speed up the offensive through the railway line of the town of New York. Therefore, the Russian army will be able to control the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk line, which will help the Russian army to completely capture the entire Donetsk territory in the future.

British expert Alexander Mercouris also said that the Russian army's capture of the town of New York shows that the Ukrainian armed forces are unable to hold the front line in the area. He said: "The town of New York has completely fallen. The Ukrainian army cannot build enough major fortifications, so the Russian army will continue to advance." Ukrainian President Zelensky also responded to the loss of the town of New York, saying that the situation of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Donetsk and Toretsk directions is very complicated. Ukrainian MP Mariana Bezuglaya said that due to the mistakes of the Ukrainian military command, the Ukrainian army is withdrawing all its troops from the Donetsk region. In this case, the Russian army will soon control Toretsk.
