The Ukrainian army has been shelling Gorlovka from here since 2014.

Russian media said that the town of New York is particularly important to all Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk direction, even more important than Avdeyevka. According to the Russian newspaper Izvestia on the 21st, Russian military expert Anatoly Matvichuk said that after the Russian army occupied the town of New York, the Ukrainian army would lose the opportunity to strengthen its defense in the entire southern direction of Donetsk. For the Ukrainian army, the main significance of holding the town of New York and Toretsk is that this position is a shield south of Konstantinovka, and Konstantinovka is an important logistics hub for the entire Donetsk Ukrainian army cluster and a major supply and transit point.
