In 1904, Yang Yuting was not qualified to take the examination for the title of a scholar. However, he managed to get the qualification to take the examination by making efforts and then passed the examination. But just when he was immersed in the joy of passing the examination, the Qing government announced the abolition of the imperial examination, and the road to passing the imperial examination was hopeless. With hard work, he first passed the Fengtian Army School, and was later selected to enter the eighth term of the Japanese Army Academy. In addition to his excellent academic performance during his studies, he also developed a wide range of interpersonal relationships. Not only did he have many friends during the same period, but he also established connections with many politicians. Even Sun Yat-sen had correspondence with him.

After graduation, Yang Yuting joined the Fengtian Army. In 1916, Zhang Zuolin became the military governor of Fengtian, and Yang Yuting served as the army chief of staff. After that, Yang Yuting showed his talents. Zhang Zuolin suppressed and disintegrated the forces of Tang Yulin and others. The former small insurance captain became the famous Northeast King. Yang Yuting played a great role in this rocket-like success.

Zhang Zuolin had no interest in the navy, but Yang Yuting was fully aware of its significance. He not only recommended a famous general to be the commander of the Northeast Navy, but also devoted all his efforts to expanding the fleet and training talents. This navy once accounted for three quarters of the total tonnage of the Republic of China's navy.

At that time, land annexation in Northeast China was already very serious. Landlords never paid taxes, and poor farmers were destitute and often forced to hang themselves due to heavy taxes. Yang Yuting cut the Gordian knot and directly promulgated the most stringent land system: no matter how much land you have, as long as it is uncultivated wasteland, you must give it up and the government will distribute it to landless farmers.

Yang Yuting made drastic reforms to rectify the old Fengtian army and establish a new military system. He removed a large number of old officers and employed many newcomers who had received modern military education. The Fengtian army had a completely new look from top to bottom, and there were many talented officers at the grassroots level.

After these major events were completed, Yang Yuting's prestige in the Fengtian clique was completely established. During this period, he was constantly criticized. But Zhang Zuolin's trust in him was beyond measure.

At 5:30 a.m. on June 4, 1928, Zhang Zuolin was assassinated by the Japanese at Huanggutun Station. Yang Yuting's situation was even more complicated. On December 29, the flag was changed, but Yang Yuting firmly opposed it and refused to take a group photo on the day of the flag change in Northeast China. He believed that he should not obey Chiang Kai-shek, which led to a new conflict with Zhang Xueliang. He regarded himself as a protector of Zhang Xueliang, often boasting about the story of Zhou Gong assisting King Cheng, advising Zhang Xueliang to quit drugs and criticizing him for not asking about political affairs. Although he was well-intentioned, the young and vigorous Zhang Xueliang did not buy his account. The Japanese also took the opportunity to use the Zhengyou Party and the Chinese hooligans who were mixed in the Northeast to slander Yang Yuting everywhere and alienate the relationship between Zhang and Yang. They gave Zhang Xueliang a copy of "Japanese Biography", comparing Zhang Xueliang to the Japanese Emperor Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Yang to the Japanese Prime Minister Tokugawa who usurped the throne. It hinted to Zhang Xueliang that Yang Yuting was a hidden danger around him and should be eliminated as soon as possible. Zhang Xueliang fell into the trap, but he was still hesitant. After tossing a silver dollar three times to ask for divination, he finally made up his mind to kill Yang.

On the evening of January 10, 1929, Yang and Chang forced Zhang Xueliang to set up the Northeast Railway Supervisory Office and asked Zhang Xueliang to sign a note appointing Chang Yinhuai as the supervisor. This move prompted Zhang Xueliang to make a painful decision to execute Yang and Chang in the "Tiger Hall". Yang Yuting was 44 years old at the time.

Later, the folk legend went like this: "Blast Wu (Junsheng) and Zhang (Zuolin) to pieces, and Yang (Yuting) and Chang (Yinhuai) left."
