Water is a key resource for building a lunar research station and conducting future interstellar travel on the moon to ensure human survival. Exploring water resources is one of the top priorities for lunar exploration. Scientists have previously focused on the distribution of natural water resources on the moon. Previous research results have shown that a variety of lunar soil minerals, such as lunar soil glass, plagioclase, olivine and pyroxene, contain a small amount of water, but the water content of these minerals is only between 0.0001% and 0.02%, which is extremely rare and difficult to extract and utilize in situ on the moon. Therefore, researching and detecting new lunar water resources and their mining strategies are undoubtedly the focus of future lunar exploration projects.

One ton of lunar soil is expected to produce more than 50 kilograms of water

After in-depth research and repeated verification, researchers discovered that the lunar soil minerals have stored a large amount of hydrogen due to billions of years of radiation from the solar wind.When heated to high temperatures, hydrogen will undergo a redox reaction with the iron oxides in the minerals to produce elemental iron and a large amount of water.When the temperature rises above 1000℃, the lunar soil will melt and the water generated by the reaction will be released in the form of water vapor.
