To make matters more confusing, before the disappearance of Mike Lynch, a technology entrepreneur known as the "British Bill Gates", Stephen Chamberlain, Lynch's co-defendant in the US Autonomy and HP fraud cases, was hit and killed by a car while jogging near his home in the UK.

Mike Lynch, 59, is the founder and CEO of enterprise software company Autonomy. Previously, Autonomy founder and CEO Lynch and former Vice President of Finance Chamberlain faced "fraud charges" from the US technology giant HP. The accusation stated that Lynch exaggerated the value of Autonomy in the $11 billion corporate acquisition, causing HP to make a huge impairment of Autonomy by $8.8 billion within a year. After an 11-week criminal trial, the San Francisco Federal Court jury found Lynch and Chamberlain not guilty on June 6 this year.

According to an analysis by the Pew Research Center, only 0.4% of federal criminal cases in 2022 ended in acquittals, which means that the two administrators would be extremely lucky to get a positive outcome.

Shortly after being acquitted, Chamberlain was killed in a car accident while jogging in the UK. Then, Lynch disappeared in the sinking of the yacht "Bayesian" near the coast of Sicily, Italy. The missing also included Lynch's defense witness, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Lynch's defense lawyer. Currently, the Italian Coast Guard is conducting an emergency search and rescue.
