Zeng Guofan(November 26, 1811 - March 12, 1872), a native of Hunan. He was called "the four famous ministers of the late Qing Dynasty" together with Li Hongzhang, Zuo Zongtang and Zhang Zhidong. He served as the Governor-General of Liangjiang, the Governor-General of Zhili, and the Grand Secretary of Wuying Palace. He was awarded the first-class Yiyong Marquis and the posthumous title of "Wenzheng". Later generations called him "Zeng Wenzheng".

Zeng Guofan's outstanding achievements in calligraphy have always been overshadowed by his great influence in history. He proposed the theory of the origin of calligraphy. From the Qian Dao - masculine beauty - effort - majesty - grandeur, from the Kun Dao - feminine beauty - no effort - indifference - rhythm, he formed a systematic theoretical view of calligraphy. He left behind a diary of nearly 1.3 million words, which is a rare giant calligraphy work in ancient China. His regular script is vigorous and upright, setting up a banner of regular script that inherits the Tang, Song and Ming dynasties and combines rigidity and flexibility. His running script is vigorous, handsome and gorgeous. His small regular script and small running script are the models of the entire Qing Dynasty. He should be a great calligrapher on par with Bao Shichen and He Shaoji of the same generation.
