Previously, we published an article titled "Bedside tables are no longer popular with the times", which mentioned the reasons why bedside tables are being eliminated and the alternatives. A Sumitomo commented: "Recently I feel that the traditional dressing table can be abandoned." Everyone agreed, including me.
As promised, this time we have a sister article to talk about why the dressing table, which was once the favorite of girls, is no longer needed? And what should we do with our makeup if we don’t have a dressing table?
The dressing table itself is a false concept
What you need for dressing is a table, or a work surface, an area to store cosmetics, and a mirror that can clearly reflect your appearance. Dressing tables combine these functions and have been a must-have for bedroom furniture for a long time, and have also been marketed as exclusive for hostesses.
There are three mainstream dressing tables on the market:
Conventional type: a square table with drawers, a space on the side of the table legs as a storage cabinet, and a lighted mirror placed on the table against the wall.
Mirror flip type: the main body remains unchanged, the main table + side cabinet are for storage, but the mirror is reversed, the table top can be flipped open when in use, and put down to become a flat table when not in use.
Combination type: pull-out table and chest of drawers, the mirror can still only be mounted against the wall.
They all look very functional and exquisite, however, these dressing tables are really difficult to use!
There are mainly the following pain points:
①The desktop is not enough
Nowadays, the living rooms are getting bigger and bigger, while the bedrooms are getting smaller and smaller. After barely putting in the bed and cabinets, there is simply not enough space for a large dressing table.
However, in order to meet the rigid specifications of the hostess, I searched all over the Internet for a mini dressing table. However, when I used it, I found that it was not practical at all. When I sat down to put on makeup, I had to huddle together and my arms could not move freely.
②It is difficult to place your legs
The height of a regular dressing table is about 75 cm, and the height of a dressing stool is about 45 cm. However, a dressing table with drawers is compressed at least 15 cm downwards, so there is not enough leg room. You can either do a horse stance or a split when sitting.
③The dressing mirror is too far away
The mirror on the dressing table is too far away and too low. People with myopia and clumsy hands can't see their faces clearly when putting on makeup. It's really useless! I have no choice but to buy a small mirror. The desktop, which is not spacious to begin with, has even smaller usable area.
④Washing and putting on makeup, the movement line is unreasonable
The dressing table is in the bedroom, and the washbasin is in the bathroom. Every time after washing my face, I have to go back to the bedroom to take care of my skin and put on makeup. The movement line is very unreasonable. People with dry skin say that their faces are so dry and tight when they come out of the bathroom in winter!
These fatal flaws lead to the final fate of the dressing table - idle, or used as storage furniture to store some seldom-used cosmetics, and the mirror is super dusty and needs to be cleaned frequently...
If you don’t have a dressing table, what should you do with your makeup?
In order to "make up relatively comfortably and conveniently", instead of using an integrated dressing table, we have these 4 more practical solutions:
①Bedside chest of drawers
Combining a dressing table and a chest of drawers into one not only gives you a large enough tabletop, but also expands the storage space for cosmetics. The cabinet is only 40 cm deep, which is smaller than a regular dressing table, so you can still see your face clearly when putting on makeup in front of the mirror.
If there is enough space, it can be combined into an L shape. For small bedrooms, the straight shape is still the main choice, because the chest of drawers has fully met the storage needs. There is no need to add drawers to the dressing area, and there is enough leg space!
②Small table + cabinet + dressing mirror
A more cost-effective solution is to have a small table with wheels that can be raised or lowered, so you can put on makeup while standing or sitting, plus a full-length mirror and a metal cabinet for storage. This combination is not limited to bedrooms, but can also be placed in the living room.
The liftable small table has wheels. When you want to put on makeup, you can just pull it to a spacious area to solve the problem of limited operating space.
The iron storage cabinet is already a deity in the storage world. It has a large capacity, clear layers, is easy to take, and is cheap. After putting on makeup, all the cosmetics are put into the cabinet, and the desktop remains tidy.
③Washing Basin
Many friends who like to put on makeup on the sink have probably already done so. Indeed, instead of trying to build a dressing table in the bedroom, it is better to put on makeup directly on the sink, and you can wash your brushes at the same time.
The storage tools of the washbasin are limited, so according to different living habits, these three storage factions are derived:
1) Messy Party
I don’t like to put things neatly, and I just spread my cosmetics casually on the sink, so I can find what I need at a glance. The key point here is: messy does not mean sloppy.
Google's office culture has this: clutter is a virtue. Ideas generated in a cluttered space will be more innovative and interesting, because a cluttered environment can make people think more flexibly.
2) The handy party
Use nail-free glue and transparent acrylic boxes to store items on the wall next to the sink. It is extremely convenient to grab items at any time.
This approach is similar to the "sustainable and easy storage" advocated by Japanese storage master Saori Honda. She believes that the purpose of storage is not only to keep the surface clean and tidy, but also to make the storage location easy to access and easier to use. Only such an approach is sustainable.
However, we can use a nice storage rack with a frame to replace the acrylic storage box that has no sense of order to increase the aesthetics.
3) Neat
People who like to be neat will put all their cosmetics and skin care products into the mirror cabinet and take them out when they need them, keeping the desktop tidy and happy.
This style of daily storage is similar to that of another Japanese storage and organization master, Rieko Nishiguchi, which can be summarized as: Beauty Storage → Daily storage from a female perspective.
However, people who like this storage method must also be minimalists. They will not buy too many useless items, but will simplify the items and only keep the essentials. Only in this way will personal storage be easier.
Here’s an advanced version for those who like to be tidy, making storage easier: clever use of enamel plates.
In the mirror cabinet on the side, a magnetic enamel plate is installed. The backs of all cosmetics are pasted with magnetic glue and adsorbed on the enamel plate, making them clear at a glance, easy to take and easier to store.
④Washing table + dressing table + storage
I think this combination is the best dressing plan at present, which is to extend the washbasin and connect it to the dressing table, and then add a storage cabinet.
Firstly, the traffic flow is reasonable. The dressing table is placed in the bathroom. After washing up on the right side, you can sit on the left side to do your skin care and makeup. You can also blow-dry your hair and put on makeup. All can be done in the bathroom. In the past, you had to wet the powder puff and run to the bathroom and come back.
Secondly, there is ample storage space. On the side is a display storage cabinet that reaches the ceiling. It has a large capacity. You can put all kinds of stockpiled goods on the top, and daily cosmetics at the bottom. You can also put skin care products on the table. It’s so cool!
Thirdly, the space is free and flexible, and one can sit or stand. Customized models allow one to decide whether drawers are needed without affecting the leg extension space.
Fourthly, traditional dressing tables are mostly 60 cm wide, which is too far from the mirror, while washbasins are generally only 45 cm wide, so there is no pressure to see the beautiful face clearly!
The only drawback is that this solution has requirements for the area of the bathroom, because the length of the washbasin is at least 60 cm, plus the dressing table of about 80 cm, this area must be at least 1.4 meters long to be perfect;
Another requirement is that the bathroom must be separated into dry and wet areas so that putting on makeup and using the toilet do not affect each other.
