Smart Manufacturing, incubated in Hong Kong Science Park, is an innovative company in the field of intelligent manufacturing. It took only 18 months from its establishment to become an "industry unicorn". Smart Manufacturing's founder Jia Jiaya is an authoritative expert in computer vision and computer imaging, and a tenured professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After leading the Deep Vision Lab (DV Lab) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to become a world-class research and development institution, he joined the entrepreneurial wave.
From a scientist to an entrepreneur, Jia Jiaya of Simou Technology is just one of the choices made by Hong Kong's technology innovation in recent years. There are also well-known companies such as DJI Technology and SenseTime Technology, whose early entrepreneurial buds came from Hong Kong and became unicorn companies that came out of Hong Kong Science Park.
According to the 2023 Hong Kong Startup Statistics Survey, the number of start-ups and the scale of employees in Hong Kong hit record highs this year. A total of 4,257 start-ups chose Hong Kong, an increase of 34% over 2019. Behind this is the support of Hong Kong's strong innovation and technology ecosystem, and the various stakeholders in the ecosystem, including the SAR government, are making every effort to promote innovation and technology into the "golden age". A wave of scientific and technological innovation is ready to take off. In June this year, the "Global Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Report 2024" was released. In the list of emerging entrepreneurial ecosystems, Hong Kong ranked first in Asia and third in the world. This is also the third consecutive year that Hong Kong has ranked first in Asia.
As Hong Kong's largest innovation and technology ecosystem and corporate R&D base, the Hong Kong Science Park, which carries the mission of Hong Kong's scientific and technological innovation development, is undoubtedly a microcosm of the entire "golden age" of innovation and technology: as of July this year, the park has gathered more than 1,800 innovation and technology companies, and has raised more than HK$94 billion for park companies in the past five years. The number of unicorns has reached 12, including 6 local Hong Kong companies and 6 overseas companies.
In the face of the growing demand for scientific and technological innovation,In September 2023, with the support of the governments of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation unveiled its first mainland branch - Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch in Futian District, Shenzhen.Since its inception, the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch has been carrying an important mission. It is not only a one-stop service platform for scientific and technological enterprises and institutions, expanding the innovation and technology ecosystem to the Greater Bay Area, but also one of the driving forces for Hong Kong's innovation and technology to integrate into the development of the Greater Bay Area, forming a synergistic effect with the Hong Kong Science Park in the supported technology fields.
Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch
With its international experience in incubating innovative and technological enterprises and its advantages in talent, capital, etc., the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen is rapidly becoming an emerging innovation hub in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.Up to now, with the help of the Shenzhen branch, more than ten enterprises in the park have achieved a total financing amount of more than 200 million yuan, and obtained more than 40 million yuan of policy funding support through local government funding projects.
The one-stop service of the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch has attracted many companies to develop in the Shenzhen Branch in terms of helping settled scientific and technological enterprises to raise funds and explore the Greater Bay Area and overseas markets. As of July 2024, it is reported that more than 50 scientific and technological enterprises and scientific research institutions have settled in the park. One of the many companies is Chuangleng Technology, a company that provides non-electric refrigeration technology. It has already received incubation support from the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation and has settled in the Shenzhen branch of the Hong Kong Science Park to explore the Greater Bay Area market. In May this year, Chuangleng Technology received its fourth round of financing, attracting investors such as Xinchen Capital under CITIC Capital, Bianshi Technology Holdings and Hong Kong and China Gas.
BioMed, one of the first biopharmaceutical companies to settle in the Shenzhen branch, has also welcomed new development opportunities in the Greater Bay Area. The company has completed its seed round of financing, with investors including Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund (AEF), Gobi Partners GBA, and TIMC. In April this year, the company also announced that it had received investment from CUHK Innovation Limited, which is also the first startup invested by CUHK Innovation since its establishment.
While fully supporting the development of enterprises in the park in the mainland market, the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch also plays the role of a "bridge" for technology companies to go overseas.Providing overseas services for mainland enterprises that plan to expand overseas markets, and has assisted a number of science and technology enterprises such as Nezha Automobile to settle in the Hong Kong Science Park, or "go global" through Hong Kong and develop overseas, actively promote the mutual flow of scientific and technological innovation resources between Hong Kong, overseas and the Mainland.
By making good use of Hong Kong's advantages and in line with the "bringing in and going global" strategy, the Hong Kong Science Park Shenzhen Branch will assist innovative and technological enterprises to go global from mainland China to develop international markets, or enter the mainland China market from all over the world to explore new areas of innovation and technology, and work with more partners to create a thriving innovation and technology ecosystem in the Greater Bay Area.
