Gurman: Apple has not given up on its own cellular modem technology and will continue to spend billions of dollars developing related chips
On August 18, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman revealed in the latest Power On newsletter that Apple has not given up on developing its own cellular modem technology. The company plans to continue spending billions of dollars and millions of hours developing the chips.。
It is understood that a cellular modem is a hardware module used to connect to a cellular network. This module mainly converts digital signals into radio signals for transmission, and receives radio signals and converts them back into digital signals, thereby realizing cellular network data communication.
Current Apple devices use modem chips provided by Qualcomm. Since 2018, Apple has been hoping to get rid of this situation. However, Apple's self-designed hardware modules have been unsatisfactory and often have problems with signal strength and heating. (Source: IT Home)
Meta Quest 3 headset perspective camera was "cracked", developers successfully run computer vision model
On August 18, a developer cleverly bypassed the limitations and successfully used the Quest 3's perspective camera to run a custom computer vision model that can recognize objects seen by the camera.
Meta currently does not allow third-party developers to directly access the camera of the Quest series headsets, but Michael Gschwandtner, co-founder and lead developer of the XRWorkout fitness app, posted a video on social media showing that he successfully bypassed this restriction.
In the demonstration video, the open source MobileNet V2 target detection model runs natively on Quest 3 at a frame rate of 0.75Hz. Gschwandtner's application builds a webview, which is a Chromium browser instance embedded in the application. The webview automatically loads a URL that supports Quest headset projection (oculus.com/casting), which allows the Quest headset to project its own image to other devices. Next, the user needs to log in completely with a Meta account in this window. Once completed, start the screen projection function through the Quest system menu. It should be noted that this time the screen is not projected to another device, but from the headset to the same application inside the headset. (Source: IT Home)
Ministry of Industry and Information Technology: Will launch AI face-changing fraud risk reminder function, which will only run locally on mobile phones
On August 18, according to CCTV.com, AI face-changing fraud detection and early warning technology is being tested.
Li Kun, an expert from the anti-fraud task force of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said: "We are working with mobile terminal companies in the industry to launch an AI face-changing fraud risk reminder function. This function only runs locally on the mobile phone and can effectively protect user data from being leaked. After user authorization, it can provide users with AI face-changing fraud risk warning reminders."
When the technician who had his face replaced by AI initiated a video call with the reporter, the test mobile terminal prompted "The other party is suspected of being a fake identity." Click the detection button, and after scanning the image, the system prompts "The probability of AI face replacement synthesis is 93%."
AI face-changing mainly uses deep synthesis technology. The "Regulations on the Management of Deep Synthesis of Internet Information Services" proposes means of algorithm filing and security assessment, and requires deep synthesis service providers to add explicit or implicit watermarks to deep synthesis content. The founder of Laidian is out of touch? Yuan Songbing responded in a WeChat Moments
Recently, media reported that Yuan Bingsong, the founder of Shenzhen Lai Dian Technology Co., Ltd., has lost contact recently. Han Bing, the first person to take over Shenzhen Lai Dian, has also lost contact with him. The two were held accountable by the legal team hired by the local state-owned assets for the loss of state-owned assets. The news has attracted widespread attention.
On the evening of August 18, Yuan Bingsong, the founder of Lai Dian Technology, posted a circle of friends saying, "God is fair, and everything that happens is the best arrangement. Follow your conscience, do things according to your heart, don't do evil, and God will bless you!" Later, the media learned from people close to Yuan Bingsong that the circle of friends was posted by Yuan Bingsong, and Yuan Bingsong himself can be contacted. Previously, Yuan Bingsong did cooperate with the investigation and could not be contacted for a month. According to previous reports, Yuan Bingsong and Han Bing may be involved in the loss of state-owned assets during the cooperation with the second-hand buyer of Shenzhen Lai Dian, the state-owned assets of Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province. New brain-computer interface system allows ALS patients to "speak" again
A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that by implanting a brain-computer interface device in the brain of an ALS patient and decoding brain signals into speech, it is possible to successfully enable them to "speak" again. The development of this new system may help people whose language abilities are impaired due to neurological diseases to restore their ability to communicate.
To develop the system, researchers from the University of California, Davis and other institutions recruited a 45-year-old male patient with ALS. He was quadriplegic before undergoing brain-computer interface device implantation surgery, and his speech was difficult for others to understand, requiring the help of a specialized translator. The researchers implanted four microelectrode arrays into the patient's left precentral gyrus, the area of the brain responsible for coordinating speech. When the patient wants to speak, the electrodes record the relevant neural activity, and the researchers decode and "translate" the recorded results into the words the patient wants to express, display them on the screen, and finally convert them into speech that simulates the patient's voice and plays them out.
Researchers said that compared with previous similar brain-computer interface technologies, the system has achieved significant improvements in training speed and decoding rate, and can achieve faster and efficient data processing and more accurate vocabulary recognition. Studies have shown that in different conversation situations, the system can decode the patient's meaning into words in real time. Patients used the system to communicate with others face to face and video chat for more than 248 hours, and the "translation" accuracy rate reached 97%. (Source: Xinhua News Agency)
