After a four-year absence, Fortnite is returning to the iPhone — but only for users in the European Union.
The return is part of a wider release of the Epic Games Store for iPhone, which went live in the EU today. Fortnite's return to iOS is a result of the EU's Digital Markets Act, which forces Apple to allow third-party app marketplaces on its platform.
EU users can now download the Epic Games Store by visiting the website on their iPhones. The popular game was removed from the App Store in 2020 after a dispute between Epic and Apple over the in-app purchase system. Prior to this, Fortnite on iOS made more than $700 million in two years, and Apple earned more than $100 million from in-site purchases.
The Epic Games Store is only available on iPhones running iOS 17.4 or later, while iPad users will have to wait until iPadOS 18 is released to access the store on their devices.
