Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered has been review-bombed on Steam due to Activision pulling the plug on the highly anticipated H2M mod. Despite being a hit in the series when it was first released in 2016, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is now at the center of controversy, receiving more than 1,000 negative reviews in just one day, with recent reviews turning into a "flood of negative reviews."

As players prepare for the release of H2M, a highly anticipated mod for Modern Warfare Remastered that aims to remake 2009's Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare Remastered has seen an influx of players in preparation for the mod's August 16 release. Considering the annual release of a new Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare Remastered has been relatively dormant for the past few years. While the surge in player numbers is thought to be due to the H2M mod, it's also been helped by a 50% discount on Steam.

Unfortunately, just one day before H2M was set to be publicly released, Activision sent a cease and desist order to the Modern Warfare Remastered mod. Due to the huge popularity of the mod, Call of Duty players were not too happy about the sudden shutdown and chose to review bomb Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam. Almost immediately, the 2016 shooter received a large number of negative reviews, causing the game's rating to plummet.

While the overall score has now dropped to middling, Modern Warfare Remastered's recent review tab has plummeted to overwhelmingly negative. Typically, initial reviews for Modern Warfare Remastered were positive, with the shooter sitting at a high score of 83 on Metacritic. However, H2M's shutdown has led to players boycotting the game and leaving a slew of negative reviews to express their displeasure with Activision's handling of the situation.

Many of the negative reviews cited Activision's reluctance to develop an official remaster of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer as a reason to look forward to the release of H2M. While the studio released a remastered version of the game's campaign in 2020, Activision confirmed that it had no plans to develop a multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare 2 Remastered.

Steam user chattsveryown was one of many users who refunded Modern Warfare Remastered after leaving a negative review, saying it was "stupid" for Activision to allow thousands of users to buy the remastered version and then send a cease and desist order to the mod creator after the game was no longer for sale. Another negative review came from user Sad.Sponge, who said that Activision clearly only cares about money and not players. Despite H2M's requirement that players own an official copy of Modern Warfare Remastered, it is unlikely that Activision will reverse its decision and allow the mod to be released, despite the massive protests from the community.
