Director Long Lingyun once revealed in an interview that the inspiration for "Where to Grow" came from his thoughts on the only-child generation and the experience of female friends around him being oppressed by the idea of favoring boys over girls. The film uses a "pseudo-suspense perspective" of multiple timelines to show the profound impact of the original family on personal growth and choices in the process of the characters exploring family secrets. At the same time, the film also explores the sacrifices and struggles of women in a patriarchal society, as well as the courage and choices of the new generation of young people when faced with the constraints of traditional concepts.
