Chinanews.com, Guigang, Guangxi, August 15th, titled: "Post-85" retired soldiers become "heads of the family": build a "warm home" for veterans
Author Yu Jing
Tea rooms, reading corners, rest areas... Walking into the first veterans' station in a property community in Guigang, Guangxi, books such as "Chinese Veterans" and "China's Double Support" are placed on the table, and slogans such as "Supporting the Army and Caring for Their Families" are hung on the wall. This station, established in June this year, has created a "home away from home" atmosphere for soldiers and their accompanying family members.
Shi Yongshun, born in 1985, is from Huaiji, Guangdong. He is the head of the station. He served in a unit of the former Guangzhou Military Region stationed in Guangxi for 16 years and made meritorious service three times. He transferred to the local area in November 2019 and took the initiative to apply for a job at the veterans service station. "Only those who have served in the military know what veterans need most," he said.
In 2020, Shi Yongshun served as the director of the Veterans Service Station in Guicheng Street, Guigang City, Guangxi. When he first arrived at the service station, he was full of enthusiasm, but what he faced was a challenge. Guicheng Street has 18 communities under its jurisdiction, and there are 7,817 veterans in the area, accounting for 55% of Gangbei District. "But after I arrived, I found that this station only had one office, and there was a serious shortage of staff and space."
After getting familiar with the situation, Shi Yongshun promptly reported the application to the subdistrict office, striving to secure the venue, personnel and funds, and proposed ideas for doing a good job in serving retired veterans. With the efforts of all parties, a month later, the veterans service station with one-stop services, cultural activities and education and training was completed and put into use, and the service station has become a warm "home" for the veterans.
For veteran Xie Hua, this service station is his warm "home". Once, Shi Yongshun visited him and learned that Xie Hua was divorced and lived alone. He kept in touch with him and visited him. Xie Hua also told Shi Yongshun about the grievances that he had buried in his heart for many years. Since then, Shi Yongshun has become Xie Hua's close comrade-in-arms. With Shi Yongshun's encouragement, he also took the initiative to participate in the activities of the volunteer service team and often went to the service station to read books and chat.
"This made me feel that no matter what happens in life, we veterans always have a warm 'home'," said Xie Hua.
Shi Yongshun said that this incident also made him understand more clearly that treating veterans requires true love, having a brotherly spirit, maintaining comradeship, and using more love to soothe the pain.
Over the past four years, Shi Yongshun, the director of the service station, has done everything from cutting hair and taking photos for veterans to being their listener, helping newly discharged veterans find jobs, and providing free medical consultations, physical therapy and rehabilitation activities for veterans from time to time... He has become the "head of the family" for the retired veterans.
Veteran Huang Shaoxian was very pleased when he mentioned the service station. Since he has been working in Guangdong for many years, he had to pay for his hospitalization due to illness. After Shi Yongshun learned about the situation, he promptly went to his home to help him apply for medical assistance reimbursement. "I used to pay for medical treatment myself. Since the establishment of the Veterans Service Station, the station applied for medical assistance for me in a timely manner after knowing that I was hospitalized. I feel very warm and touched." Huang Shaoxian said.
Talking about the future, Shi Yongshun wants to continue to be a good "head of the family" for retired veterans, give full play to the advantages of the veterans' service station, do a good job in veterans' service and support, and continuously enhance veterans' sense of gain, honor, and happiness.
