According to Hong Kong's China News Service: The US presidential election is underway, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Middle East issue and the Taiwan issue are all topics of attack and defense between the two parties in the United States. Polls by US think tanks show that public opinion on many diplomatic issues shows a different position from the current government policy. Even most of the American respondents agree that Taiwan should be required to invest more resources to strengthen its military strength before the United States makes a commitment to "defend Taiwan." This is consistent with Trump's view that Taiwan should pay "protection fees."
A recent poll released by the US think tank "Defense Focus" showed that 44% of respondents supported that "avoiding war with mainland China" was more important than "Taiwan's so-called 'political autonomy'", while 36% expressed neutrality.
In addition, when asked whether the United States should require Taiwan to invest more in strengthening its military strength as a prerequisite for any "defense commitment" to Taiwan, 66% of the respondents agreed with this view.
