Recently, I saw a very interesting news.
"Two big guys in the car industry got into an argument over something, and one of them even said, "Boys using small foldable phones will make them look feminine.""
No, man. Do mobile phones have to distinguish user groups by gender now? In addition, small folding screen mobile phones are not "exclusive to female users". There are also many points that attract boys.
Take me for example. In the past few days, I have been trying to use Xiaomi MIX Filp as my main phone. I have never seen anyone call me "feminine", and no passers-by have cast strange eyes on me. Instead, they all asked if this was the latest phone released by Xiaomi. It looks cool and fun.
You see, passers-by didn’t dislike it, but instead added “social attributes” to me.
Well, today, based on my experience of using Xiaomi MIX Filp these days, I would like to talk to you about whether small folding phones are suitable for boys. By the way, in some cases, I also added Honor Magic V Filp for comparison. Without further ado, let’s start the feature film.
Appearance: Even boys need fashion
To be honest, Xiaomi MIX Filp is indeed good-looking and exquisite.
But its weight and thickness are not well controlled. The closed thickness reaches 15.99mm, which is not as good as the Honor Magic V Flip's 14.89mm. When unfolded, the Xiaomi MIX Flip is also 7.88mm, which is slightly thicker than the Honor's 7.15mm, but the weight of both phones is around 195g, and the feeling of holding them is similar.

The back cover of Xiaomi MIX Flip is AG frosted glass, which feels delicate to the touch and has a pearlescent texture when the light shines through it. The bright metal frame also makes it more refined. Xiaomi also chamfered and rounded the edges of the frame, which, combined with the "equal depth micro-curved small screen", greatly improves the feel of the phone.
Perhaps in order to completely get rid of the label of "beautiful little waste", Xiaomi has put a lot of effort into the lens this time, which also makes it more prominent. It looks like a "Plus Max" version of the Minions with big eyes. Personally, I think it is a bit too big. As for the imaging performance, we will talk about it later.
The Xiaomi MIX Flip internal screen is also briefly described here: 6.86 inches, 2912*1224 resolution, 460ppi, 1-120Hz LTPO, and the quality and appearance are very good.
As for the crease issue that everyone is concerned about, the same thing applies: those who think the crease on the folding screen is annoying have never used a folding screen. However, after using it for more than a week, the crease on the Xiaomi MIX Flip is indeed more obvious than that on the Honor, but I don’t think it’s a big deal. After all, how can a folding screen be without creases? Friends who have high requirements in this regard can go to Xiaomi Home to see if they can accept it.

External screen: Today I want to be the "protagonist"
In the past, the small folding external screen has been used as a secondary screen for a long time, more like adding the function of a bracelet to the mobile phone, which makes its function very "useless".
Xiaomi and Honor have almost the same approach, both of them have made the external screen into a "full screen" so that users can use it normally without unfolding it.
In order to take care of the imaging module, Xiaomi MIX Flip has specially divided the main application area and the "smart hanging window" into two parts, which is a good planning of the "room ratio" of this small screen. This also allows the main application area to reach 3.5 inches and the ratio of 16:9.
In order to make the external screen more practical, Xiaomi has made a lot of application adaptations for it, which also covers most of the APPs we commonly use. It can be said that it can do almost everything except playing games.
In addition, separate switches are provided for Alipay, WeChat payment QR code, scan, etc., and real-time information such as flight information, boarding gate, estimated arrival time of takeout, etc. can also be displayed on this external screen.
Although it is a small screen, the input method is also adapted very comfortably, and users can still have the experience of inputting on the inner screen. As long as you want, you can use the phone normally even if you don't unfold it.
I'm not saying that I'm criticizing one and praising the other, but Honor's external screen is not as good as Xiaomi's in details. First of all, its input method is a bit small, which may be OK for a 9-key keyboard, but it's too small for a full keyboard. In addition, its external screen does not have gravity sensing, which is not a good experience.
However, Honor does a better job than Xiaomi in some applications of the external screen. For example, if the blogger's ID name on Xiaomi's Weibo is too long, it will be blocked, while Honor has made a perfect adaptation.
Of course, in order to meet the personalized needs of users, both small foldables have a series of exclusive lock screen UI and wallpapers, as well as a rich set of widgets. Even a grown man like me is confused by these cute pet wallpapers. In addition, you can also use Xiaomi's portrait cutout function to put the photos of your girlfriend on the external lock screen. It's quite fun.

You may think that boys don’t use cameras often, and at most they just scan a QR code. That’s wrong. In fact, what boys pursue is not how beautiful the photos are, but the ability to record life.
Xiaomi Mi MIX Flip did not use the ultra-wide-angle + main camera solution this time, but used a combination of a main camera and a double lens, and the configuration of the two cameras is very balanced: the main camera is a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, 1/1.55-inch sensor, f/1.7 aperture, equivalent to 23mm focal length. The telephoto is a 50-megapixel double portrait lens, equivalent to 47mm focal length, supporting a minimum focus distance of 9cm.
Let’s take a look at the sample photos directly.
It can be seen that the color saturation of the main camera of Xiaomi MIX Flip is relatively high, especially in scenes with brighter colors such as yellow and red, the visual impact is very strong, which is actually in line with my taste. Xiaomi is also very natural in the transition of light and shadow.
Although the Xiaomi MIX Flip does not have an ultra-wide-angle lens this time, I don’t think it’s a big deal. I personally think it’s better for a mobile phone to have a telephoto lens, which makes composition more convenient.
Although this 2x telephoto lens is a portrait lens, Xiaomi has provided a 4X equivalent to 94mm option. From the photos of these billboards, we can see that the details are still very rich, and the mottled marks on the wall and the light box are all well presented.
As for the portrait photos...I really can't find a young lady to take them due to my limited ability, so please bear with me. I believe that with the portrait experience accumulated by Xiaomi in the Civi series and digital series, the effect of Xiaomi MIX Flip will definitely not be bad.
However, this telephoto lens still supports a minimum focusing distance of 9cm, which is very rare among small folding cameras. I personally think that the final effect is sufficient for recording delicious food, or for girls to record jewelry and so on.
As a small folding phone, Xiaomi MIX Flip can be folded in half and placed on a table for shooting, and the external screen can also be used to monitor the composition to facilitate shooting guidance.
Performance: Only with strength can you dare to challenge
I have asked many friends around me, if they have a budget of 6,000 yuan, would they buy a small folding phone or a straight-screen flagship? They will all choose the latter, just because the straight-screen flagship has strong gaming performance, while the small folding phone is just a "waste".
Hey~ Xiaomi MIX Flip is going to break this inherent impression this time and choose the most powerful processor at present, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Gen3, just to prove that I, a small folding phone, can also play games smoothly.
First, let's run a test. Xiaomi MIX Flip scored 1.83 million points in AnTuTu. Although it is a little behind the flagship candy-bar phone that also uses Snapdragon 8Gen3, this performance is still among the best among all small folding phones.
In the actual game test, I used Xiaomi MIX Flip to play "Honor of Kings" with the highest picture quality and highest frame rate for 30 minutes. The average frame rate was 118 frames and the temperature was around 40 degrees. It seems that the King is like Lu Bu riding a dog to Xiaomi, so we have to increase our intensity.
When the highest quality and 60-frame option was turned on for "Genshin Impact", after 30 minutes of continuous running and killing monsters, its average frame rate was 55 frames, and the body temperature reached about 43 degrees. We can also see from the data chart that Xiaomi Mi MIX Flip was running at nearly full frame at the beginning, but when the body temperature rose, the frame rate dropped sharply to 30 frames, and when the temperature dropped a little, it ran at 60 frames again, which was very strange, as if it only had these two options. Such optimization will cause a strong sense of fragmentation in the game. If you insist on using it to play games, it is recommended that you sacrifice some image quality to ensure smoothness.
In general, the performance of Xiaomi MIX Flip is good. If you expect it to be comparable to the straight-screen flagships in the same price range, I think you are thinking too much. At the same time, it is not suitable for heavy gamers. If you go online every day to do a daily game, there is no problem.
Battery life and heat generation: It can be used for a whole day, but the heat control is not good enough
The most surprising thing about Xiaomi MIX Flip is its battery life. Please watch the VCR to see how big the battery is:
Just kidding, Mr. Lei must have made a slip of the tongue during the press conference. The truth is that the Xiaomi MIX Flip is equipped with a 4780mAh battery.
According to my usual habit of using mobile phones, I usually go out with 100% battery. If I don't charge it for a day, when I get home at around 9 o'clock, there is still about 23% battery left. The screen usage time is more than 6 hours. During this period, I use both the internal and external screens.
Another time, I went out to play on the weekend and watched its battery drain rapidly. Hey, when I got home at around 7 o'clock, there was still 20% of the battery left. At the last check, the screen was used for 6 and a half hours. Of course, I also used the inner and outer screens at the same time, so the overall battery life of Xiaomi MIX Flip still surprised me.
But it was also that time when I went out that reminded me of Xiaomi's slogan "Born for fever". It was really inexplicable heating. Sometimes it was heating even when I didn't do anything, especially when you use this small screen outdoors in nearly 40 degrees, it heats up faster and more violently. I'm not just bashing it, many people have encountered the same problem as me.
The reason is that there are too many "buffs" piled up on the outer screen, such as the screen, camera, soc, battery and other components are all here, it is hard not to heat up. This is not Xiaomi's fault, other manufacturers have not solved it well, such as Honor Magic VFilp also heats up, but the situation may be better, just lukewarm and not as severe as Xiaomi.
As for Pengpai OS, I will only say one thing. When Xiaomi MIX Flip uses the external screen to open applications, there is always an inexplicable pause, and it is not smooth with the hand. I will not say much about the other things. Those who understand will understand. I suggest that friends who want to buy it go to Xiaomi Home to experience it.
Summary: Xiaomi’s first small foldable device is full of sincerity
Let’s go back to the question at the beginning, “Can boys use small foldable phones?”
Nonsense, of course it works.
Again, different life and work circles will lead to different requirements of consumers for mobile phones. In fact, the reason why boys accept small folding-screen mobile phones is not just because of convenience, but because they enjoy the diverse and richer interactive experience it brings to users.
As the last mainstream mobile phone manufacturer to enter the "small folding" market, Xiaomi has shown great sincerity, which can be said to have completely broken the previous label of "beautiful little waste" for small folding phones. The reliable battery life and performance are enough to meet various needs, and the external screen application has also been optimized so that users do not feel disconnected when switching between the internal and external screens. It should be said that Xiaomi is full of sincerity in both "inside" and "outside", and has also shown us a different small folding screen, which may be the key to why it can become "popular with both men and women".
After all, the small foldable is a mobile phone, and today's mobile phones are still transformed from tools to symbols of individuality. Sometimes a small change by a mobile phone manufacturer will affect the purchasing decision of consumers, which is true for girls as well as boys.
