"Doctor Chen, I heard that you went to the Paris Olympics to be the team doctor for the women's beach volleyball national team. You have become thinner and darker!" On the afternoon of August 14, when Chen Junyu, the attending physician of the Rehabilitation Department of the Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedic Hospital, appeared in the hospital, many colleagues joked.
It turns out that since February last year, Chen Junyu has been accompanying the women's beach volleyball national team as a team doctor, "fighting north and south" until the end of this Olympic Games. What is it like to be a national team doctor? During his time in Paris, what kind of sports health protection did he provide for the athletes? Chen Junyu accepted an exclusive interview with reporters.
He created injury files for 8 players. His meticulousness and professionalism impressed the coaching staff and players.
Chen Junyu, 37, is from Wanzhou, Chongqing. In 2011, he graduated from Chengdu Sports University with a degree in sports medicine. In 2013, he started working at Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedic Hospital.
"I never thought I could become a team doctor for the national team," said Chen Junyu. In February last year, in preparation for the Hangzhou Asian Games and the Paris Olympics, the Volleyball Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China recruited team doctors for the national women's beach volleyball team. Chen Junyu submitted her resume with a try-it attitude and was successfully accepted for a trial period.
It is called a trial, but it is also a test. Beach volleyball players often suffer from some injuries, and injuries to the shoulders, waist, wrists and legs are also common.
During the one-week trial period, Chen Junyu conducted a comprehensive and detailed examination of the injuries of the eight players at the time and created an injury file for each of them. After each day of treatment, he also recorded their feelings in detail to ensure tracking and feedback. His dedication and professional attitude impressed the coaching staff and players.
Therefore, starting from the Hangzhou Asian Games, Chen Junyu officially became the team doctor of the national team. Chen Junyu told reporters that he was able to become the team doctor of the national team because, on the one hand, he was a sports medicine doctor, and his professional skills were suitable; on the other hand, he was very good at solving injuries without drugs, and he won the first prize in the 3rd Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Skills Competition.
The specialty is acupuncture, and foreign athletes and referees come here to visit.
What are the responsibilities of a team doctor? "For example, colds, fevers, external injuries, and internal injuries are all daily diseases that team doctors have to deal with." Chen Junyu said that his specialty is acupuncture, which is hailed as one of the "mysterious powers of the East" at this Olympics.
In this Olympics, the Chinese women's beach volleyball team sent Xue Chen and Xia Xinyi. "Xue Chen is a veteran player with a shoulder injury and a previous right shoulder surgery, so special care must be taken to protect her. Xia Xinyi is a young player, and the main thing is to keep her in a normal competitive state." After more than a year of getting along, Chen Junyu knows the two athletes' conditions very well. So, he would do acupuncture for Xue Chen every three days, and massage for relaxation every day after training or after the game. For Xia Xinyi, the main focus is on local muscle relaxation.

Before the Paris Olympics, Chen Junyu followed the women's beach volleyball national team to compete in countries around the world and play points matches. Gradually, athletes and referees from other countries learned about his excellent skills and came to him for help.
Chen Junyu recalled that last year and this year, Australian men's beach volleyball team members came to him twice to help with trauma in Latvia and Mexico. This year, a Brazilian chief referee, Reshifa, also came to him because of synovitis and made an appointment with him: "Chen, I heard that your acupuncture skills are very good, can I try it?"
After the experience, Ruishifa gave him a thumbs up and said, "Chen, your technique is very good. I feel much better."

When athletes are training, he always stands by, ready to "go on the field" at any time.
Traveling around the world with the national team to compete sounds like a "good job", but Chen Junyu said that he spends most of his time accompanying the athletes in training.
The daily training is boring and hard: training starts at 7:30 in the morning and ends at 9:30; training starts again at 3:00 in the afternoon and ends at 5:00; after dinner, they receive treatment from the team doctor and rehabilitation therapist. When the athletes are training, Chen Junyu is always by their side, ready to "go on the field" at any time.
"Sometimes, athletes need to wrap their wrists with a fascia tape when they injure them. At this time, the team doctor needs to quickly determine the direction of the tape and control the duration of the tape to prevent obstruction of blood circulation." Chen Junyu said that behind the athletes' wonderful games, they often silently endure the pain brought by injuries.
In Chen Junyu's luggage, in addition to acupuncture needles, electroacupuncture devices, muscle tape, fascia compression belts, ultrasound and other instruments and supplies, there are also two thick books, "Sports Injuries" and "Acupuncture Encyclopedia". "They are equivalent to the 'Xinhua Dictionary' of our sports medicine." Chen Junyu said that whenever he has free time, he will flip through these two "living dictionaries". "Traditional Chinese medicine is like a vast ocean, and there is always something to learn." He said that since he has engaged in this profession, he must learn the technology thoroughly.
According to the relevant person in charge of Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Orthopedic Hospital, Chen Junyu is the first traditional Chinese medicine doctor to serve the national team in the hospital's more than 60 years of history. The hospital will continue to leverage the three major specialty advantages of traditional Chinese medicine in bone setting, tendon nourishment, and rehabilitation, so that more people can recognize and understand traditional Chinese medicine and carry forward it.
