Multiple rumors have suggested that the iPhone 16 models will come with a brand new button designed to make it easier to take photos when the device is in landscape mode.

The button, which Apple refers to internally as the "shoot button," will be one of the most advanced buttons ever released, supporting multiple gestures and being able to respond to pressure. It's rumored that the button will be able to do all of the following:

  • Tap the button to automatically focus when capturing images or videos.
  • Press the button firmly to take a photo.
  • Swipe left or right on the button to zoom in and out.
  • There may also be a gesture for switching between photo and video modes, similar to how you press and swipe to shoot video in the iPhone camera app.
  • The ability to autofocus by tapping a button will be a gesture that DSLR users are used to, as this is typically how autofocus is achieved when using high-end cameras.

Apple plans to place the button on the right side of the iPhone, where the millimeter wave antenna is located on iPhones sold in the United States, and the antenna will be moved to the left side of the device to make room.

The camera button has appeared in CAD renders and mockups of all four iPhones, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said this week that the button may only be available on the Pro models.

With a capture button, Apple will be able to encourage users to shoot images and videos in landscape orientation, which will look better on the Vision Pro.
