With the latest round of beta releases, Apple has introduced more tweaks and improvements ahead of iOS 18's September release. Here's a roundup of the new features. The second iOS 18.1 beta has version number 22B5023e and is 1.48GB in size on our iPhone 15 Pro Max. 22A5338b is the version number for iOS 18 beta 6.
iOS 18.1 beta 2:
Last week, we saw iOS 18 beta 5 introduce some major changes. This iOS 18.1 beta also adds the same features.
In the Photos app, Apple listened to early feedback and ditched the carousel, which could be customized to display multiple featured collections.
Hide distractions in Safari
Safari has added a new distraction control feature. The feature allows users to temporarily hide distracting elements on the screen, such as pop-ups, login boxes, and even ads on websites. There is a very cool animation that shows the elements gradually turning into dust and being blown away. After refreshing, these elements appear again.
There are a lot of small changes to the new colored icons in this version. They are now linked to the wallpaper, so when you change the wallpaper, the icon tint will change too.
Colored icons can now be tied to wallpapers
This is pretty cool, especially if you colorize the icons to match a specific wallpaper. The dark icons will also show up in the Notification Center.
In addition, more and more non-stock apps have dark mode interfaces. These interfaces may be automatically generated, but Apple is still constantly adjusting the program to work with more high-profile apps to make them look better.
In the Photos app, Apple has swapped the search and select buttons on the photo grid, while the aforementioned featured sections have also been removed.
The Browse tab in the Music app has changed its label and is now the You tab.
The control center now has a dedicated Bluetooth switch button
In the redesigned Control Center, there's a new Bluetooth toggle button. It's a dedicated toggle button and, like the other control buttons, comes in a variety of sizes.
Apple Intelligence is now available in the EU, assuming the language and region are set to the US. If you look under Apple Intelligence in Settings, you’ll find a new toggle for typing into Siri.
Speaking of Apple Intelligence, it's much more responsive than Beta 1. Opening Siri is very fast and the responses are much quicker.
iOS 18.1 beta 2: Final touches
About a month after the release of iOS 18.1, Apple has begun putting the finishing touches on the update. Many of the features we saw in iOS 18.1 will first appear in iOS 18.0.
There are many pop-up screens in iOS 18.1 beta 2
With many new features, there are many splash screens that pop up in the app to inform the user about the changes and how to use the new features. This beta has a lot of these. Photos, Music, and Multilingual Keyboard all have these introductory screens.
Comparison between iOS 18.1 beta 2 and iOS 18 beta 6:
iOS 18.0 beta 6 includes all of the above changes, with the exception of "Apple Intelligence".
It seems like Apple wants to keep the two betas consistent before the release of iOS 18. This means iOS 18.1 will have all the features of iOS 18, plus any new features that are added.
Apple will release iOS 18.0 this fall, most likely in September alongside new iPhones, followed by iOS 18.1 and Apple Intelligence, likely in October.
There is a public beta for iOS 18, but there is no iOS 18.1 release for the public, at least not yet.
