The tenth brother likes Qi Baishi the most. He can be said to have mastered his charm. However, their life experiences and interests are different. The tenth brother's paintings are desolate and ghostly, while Mr. Qi's paintings are more sunny. Even if his paintings involve ghosts and monsters, they are warm and not so depressing.
Lao Shi talked to me more about art. He naturally admired masters of all ages, but he preferred those with personality, style, emotion, and brushwork. Bada, Jin Nong, Luo Ping, Chen Laolian, Xu Wei, Xiang Shengmo, Wu Changshuo, Huang Binhong, Lin Fengmian, Pan Tianshou, etc. were all his favorites. Lao Shi also studied and learned about Western painting masters, and he also liked Picasso, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Morandi, Monet, Matisse, etc.
Lao Shi is good at learning. Once someone gave us two albums, one of which was by Japanese printmaker Munakata Shiko and the other by Tomioka Tessai, the founder of modern Japanese literati ink painting. Lao Shi said without hesitation that he wanted Tomioka Tessai's album. Tomioka Tessai's rough clothes and messy hair, and his unrestrained brushwork, soon appeared in his brushwork, which played an important role in deepening his brushwork. Lao Shi melted Qi Baishi and Tomioka Tessai into his own face in freehand ink painting, which was desolate and gloomy, and refreshing, and was praised by people, which shows that he is good at learning.
