【New Wisdom Introduction】The hype surrounding OpenAI's Strawberry Project has risen again. Early in the morning, the CEO of Perplexity AI hinted that the AI search engine was in use. Netizens tested it online and promoted the success of their own AI.
Over the past week, OpenAI's "Strawberry" project has been hyped up, pushing everyone's emotions to the peak of excitement.
On X, the whistleblower @iruletheworldmo posted a post every few hours, almost every time related to "Strawberry", and even hinted that this Tuesday would be the day when OpenAI achieved the second level of AGI.
He claimed to have obtained inside information and said that the new GPT-4o large model will be officially released on August 13.
It is still unknown when OpenAI's Strawberry project will actually make its debut, but its rival Perplexity AI has already demonstrated a new model with "Strawberry" capabilities.
In other words, Q* has been implemented on Perplexity Pro.
This morning, CEO Aravind Srinivas posted a picture of his company’s AI cracking the “Strawberry Test”, teasing the public online:
Guess what model this is?
Compared to many models that can’t even figure out how many r’s there are in the word strawberry, Perplexity AI is really powerful.
In another demonstration, how many strawberries would it take to cover the entire surface of Mars?
The AI first estimated the area of Mars, the average size of a strawberry and the area it occupies, and finally calculated the number of strawberries covering the surface of Mars, and came up with 1.87×10*17.
With all the hints from the CEO, has Perplexity AI really launched a model with capabilities equivalent to OpenAI’s “Strawberry”?

Netizens tested
The power of the upgraded Perplexity Pro lies in its ability to deliver results through step-by-step, progressive thinking.
For example, investigating the phenomenon of quantum entanglement in the brain.
The AI will search for information about quantum entanglement, its potential implications, or theories related to the brain. It will then query recent research or theories on the effects of quantum entanglement on the brain/consciousness.
Some netizens have also tested that the "r" in any word or sentence can be easily handled.
However, some netizens have discovered that Perplexity is suspected of cheating here.
It did not "count", but called the code interpreter to write a piece of code, and then "calculated" it...
In the comment section, netizens were arguing. Some people thought that this was a good step towards the principle of illusion.
Others think it's hype, they probably counted n letters in the string and added 25 fine-tuned dialogues.
Although Perplexity AI has not yet revealed the new model behind it, it is indeed visible to the naked eye that AI's ability to think step by step makes the output stronger.
And, most importantly, the popularity of this startup’s AI products continues to grow.
AI search popularity surges
The latest FT report said that Perplexity has become one of the fastest growing applications since ChatGPT was launched.
Three months before ChatGPT was launched, former Google intern Aravind Srinivas founded the company.
Perplexity was originally designed to answer user questions through AI capabilities, including information extracted "in real time" from news websites.
This star startup has completed a new round of financing of 250 million US dollars. Investors this time include Yann LeCun, Andrej Karpathy, Bezos and other well-known industry leaders.
Perplexity AI has seen a sevenfold increase in monthly revenue and usage since the beginning of the year.
CBO Dmitry Shevelenko said that the company's AI search engine has answered about 250 million questions in the past month, which is several times more than the 500 million questions answered in the whole year of 2023.
According to insiders, at the beginning of this year, Pplexity's annualized revenue was $5 million, which was a full-year revenue forecast based on the sales of the most recent month.
Today, using the same calculation, the company's annualized revenue exceeds $35 million.
Now the company is shifting its business model from subscriptions to advertising, putting it in more intense competition with Google, which dominates the $300 billion search advertising industry.
When it comes to Perplexity, Shevelenko said, "Our users and team only think about one thing: a place where you find answers to your questions. It comes down to speed and focus."
Unlike Google and OpenAI, Perplexity does not build its own AI models. Instead, it uses a combination of AI systems such as OpenAI through licensing.
Initially, Perplexity used Microsoft Bing for support.
But now, Bing is no longer its core system. Shevelenko said, "We have our own search index and ranking system."
By collaborating with the news and academic communities, Perplexity now has a large amount of reliable information and data.
Internally, they see these source materials as a powerful advantage over Google's traditional search engine.
However, Shevelenko acknowledged that the risk of AI generating misinformation still exists, and the biggest unknown is whether AI can be reliable enough for mainstream use.
Perplexity AI is moving in this direction.
