The group round-robin competition started in the afternoon. Qi Xiangyu was in the same group as two-time world champion Victor Montalvo (Bboy Victor) of the United States, Asian Games champion Shigekix (Bboy Shigekix) of Japan, and new generation player Hiro10 (Bboy Hiro10) of Japan. In the semifinals of last year's World Championships, Qi Xiangyu lost to Montalvo and stopped in the semifinals; in the Hangzhou Asian Games, Qi Xiangyu was blocked by Shigekix from the finals.

After two days of competition, breakdancing made its debut at the Olympics. Chinese athlete Liu Qingyi won the women's bronze medal. Since the Los Angeles Olympics did not include it as an official competition event, breakdancer will temporarily miss the Olympic stage four years later.
