Reference News reported on August 8According to a report by Japan's Mainichi Shimbun on August 8, the Ukrainian military plans to deploy robot weapons on the front line for ground combat. This move is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and making up for the shortage of troops. The Ukrainian government hopes that it will become a trump card to turn the tide of the war. On the other hand, there are great risks in using weapons that rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to make judgments.

The report said that in July this year, the opening ceremony of the Ukrainian state-owned military supply enterprise's branch in the United States was held in Washington. Ukrainian Strategic Industry Minister Kamyshin said: "This year will be the year of unmanned ground weapon systems, and more weapons will be deployed to the front line. We expect unmanned weapons to become a game changer in the next 12 months."

According to media reports and other data, Ukraine currently has about 300,000 soldiers in service, while the Russian army has deployed 400,000 to 600,000 soldiers, and Ukraine is at a disadvantage in terms of troop numbers. In addition, according to the US government's estimates, as of last summer, the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed was about 70,000. While strengthening mobilization, controlling the number of casualties is a major issue.

One of the solutions the Ukrainian army is promoting is weapon automation. In December last year, the Ukrainian government proposed a goal of producing 1 million drones by 2024, and President Zelensky announced a plan to create a drone combat system unit within the army in February this year.

Kamyshin revealed that a system that integrates robotic weapons and drones will be established, and explained that "the basic policy is to keep Ukrainian soldiers away from the front line as much as possible." It is said that the production of robotic weapons is mainly undertaken by Ukrainian companies and will be used for ground combat and the transfer of wounded soldiers. (Compiled by Ma Xiaoyun)
