China Daily, August 7: The 17th Global Youth Model United Nations Conference (WE Model United Nations EXPO 2024) opened recently at the Beijing International Convention Center. The theme of this year's conference is "WE agree to disagree", which aims to make all participants realize that in this world full of diverse cultures and differences, human beings are facing various complex and important global issues, but they need to maintain an open mind in communication and cooperation, and respect and understand different views and positions.
The four-day conference will see more than 1,000 young friends, led by Model United Nations teams and presidiums from Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Oxford, University of California, Berkeley, McGill University, Boston University, Peking University, Fudan University and other universities, discuss the world situation in eight branch venues, special venues and 21 committees.
At the opening ceremony of the conference, Professor He Changchui, former Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, said that the international community urgently needs to strengthen unity, increase momentum, and maintain the global governance system with the United Nations at its core, especially to mobilize all stakeholders, including young people, to take practical actions to achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda and make contributions to world peace, security and development. Professor He encouraged young friends to participate more in international activities, think about problems from a global perspective, solve problems from practical things around them, and make the Global Model United Nations a "global platform for promoting youth development" that attracts more young people to participate in global governance, focuses on sustainable development, and is action-oriented.
Professor Zhang Qiang, Director of the UNDP-China Risk Governance Innovation Project Laboratory, said in his keynote speech that the international community is currently facing many global challenges, including climate change, health crises, economic inequality, war and refugee crises, cyber security, etc. In the face of many challenges, only through global solidarity and cooperation and strengthening international exchanges among the people and youth can we better respond and create a better future.
During this conference, in addition to the group meetings of different committees, participating representatives will also participate in special activities such as "Simulated Carbon Trading Competition", "United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Workshop", and "Top University International Model United Nations Chairperson Exchange".
